My parents have a house worth about $300,000 and their property taxes are about $5000 a year. They had a huge amount of equity to put into the house when they build and did a large amount of work on their own during the construction. They also recently refinanced in the last year to lock in at lower interest rates.

After their downpayment, sweat equity and refi, their payments are lower than their taxes.

wow, i guess i forgot how much higher property taxes are in the US versus Canada.

mortgage, by far.
wife's student loan payments from law school after that.

don't know about Canada, but in the US property taxes vary widely depending on where you live. e.g., in New Hampshire, there is no state income or sales tax, so the state property tax is relatively high. where I live, there's no state property tax, but there is a county property tax, which varies depending on which county you live in. etc.

Rent - $850
Car+Ins - $350
Food - $250
Gas - $150
TV/Internet - $90
Gym - $20
Cell - $20

And trying to save $1500-1700/mo.

$650 - Mortgage payment (includes property tax/PMI/homeowner's insurance)
$500 - Food
$200 - Gas

Overall my wife and I have some pretty low expenses.
