Last year's thread:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2034928

Per my history, I bombed my 2010 resolutions. However, I won't let that stop me from making progress this year  Here are my 2011 goals:

Kaido's 2011 H&F Resolutions:

1. No sugar for a year
2. Develop the "go to bed early" habit
3. Track my progress every day here on H&F (365 days straight)
4. "Body by Dave" Phases 1 & 2

I got through 6 weeks of no sugar in 2010 before I caved. I didn't really cave, I just stopped because I didn't see a huge difference in my life from going off sugar. I thought there would be a more dramatic difference in my quality of life, but there wasn't. The reason I want to do it again is because if I don't have any sugar available to turn to, I'll have to eat something better, which will help me stay on track with healthy eating.

The thing that helped me most was an early bedtime. I am a total nightowl and prefer going to bed around 2:00am, given the choice. Most nights I get to bed around 11:00pm because I wake up early for work. I'd like to start doing 8:00pm. It's incredibly early, but I have much more energy and focus in the mornings, so I can pursue more of my personal projects that way. I've found that an early bedtime, coupled with 7 hours of sleep, is the right answer for me. THAT is what cleared up my skin, gave me energy and motivation, and helped me stay focus - not going off sugar. I really struggle with it, but I have a good system for going to bed & staying in bed (cell phone alarm reminder & audiobooks on my iPod), and I'm determined to be successful at it this year. From the last few years of learning about my body, an early bedtime has had absolutely the most impact on me in terms of dramatic benefits.

I do extremely well when I track things. I've found when I post regularly, it helps me to stay accountable to myself, so I'm determined to post every single day in my personal 2011 H&F thread to help me stay on track. Even if I slip up or do nothing or I'm sick, I'm going to post.

Lastly, I've put together my 3-phase program, "Body by Dave". Phase 1 is fat loss (goal is 160 pounds, currently 193 - goal is to lose 33 pounds through a combination of a healthy eating plan & daily cardio) - 3 months. Phase 2 is my strength foundation (calisthenics-based) - 9 months. Phase 3 is my advanced strength training (also calisthenics-based) - 12 months (that will be my 2012 resolution, assuming the world doesn't end). I have a diet put together, I have an elliptical machine, and I know what exercises to do and have a schedule for everything. All I have to do is simply do the actions every day, and through cutting out sugar and going to bed early, and tracking my progress here on the boards, I'm going to do them, by golly! :D

So let's hear YOUR 2011 Health & Fitness goals!

1) Compete in my first INBF natural bodybuilding show
2) Bench 405 raw
3) Get my deadlift back up to pre-injury levels (500+)

I have some others in mind, but with no definitive goal in mind such as increase my back width/thickness. The show I plan on doing is the INBF Natural New York State Bodybuilding & Figure Championships, which will be in October. I benched 350 the other day, so I'm on the road to benching 405. I'm also competing in a push-pull meet in just two weeks, so we'll see where my deadlift is. I'm thinking low 400's, which I'm not entirely happy about, but it's the strongest it's been since my back injury.

For me 2011 will be about working through all of the setbacks I had during 2010:

1. Recover from torn rotator cuff (Surgery scheduled for 2/28/11)

2. Try to stay active in the gym even if it doesn't involve lifting weights (this will be a very difficult one for me)

3. Get back to pre-torn rotator cuff strength & body composition by 12/31/11 (not sure if this one is reasonable but it is something I will strive for)

4. Drop back down to 180 lbs (Weighed in at 233 lbs as of this morning)

5. Keep a daily log of progress, thoughts, personal musings, etc...

6. Stay positive

I am a long time lurker and first time poster. I just wanted to add I enjoy reading the stuff posted in H&F.

Good luck! Are you going to do a routine? I saw an awesome one on Youtube where he did a Spartan from the 300:

Well welcome aboard, thanks for posting! Good job on taking it easy on the road to recovery...I've got a lot of family/friends in sports who get injuries but keep on playing, then the injuries never heal and they're screwed the rest of their lives. But it's hard not to play because of habit and peer pressure, haha.

Sounds like a lot of us are in the same boat - fat loss here we come! :D

Hmmm...mine are pretty realistic assuming I don't spend another 6 months on the road:

2.5x BW deadlift
2x BW squat
BW snatch

Should be easily attainable by June/July...the snatch will depend on how much time I spend at a lifting gym, whether it be a CF box or otherwise.

First 6 months: get as close to a 45 minute 8k as possible while not becoming a beanpole (maintain a 170 pound weight)

Next six months: body weight squat and benchpress and martial arts training. Get as close to a 20 minute 5k as possible.

Run a half marathon (actual race, not training) in VFFs or similarly minimal shoes. Possibly a full if things go well.

Run 10k outdoors in bare feet, although not necessarily a race.

Run a sub-50 minute 10k in a race, regardless of what I'm wearing.

Other than that, I don't have much that's very specific; just continue with strength training, even if that means only maintaining what I have, but preferably more of course.

Mine is to get to 195lb. Very doable.

But I'm in a bit of a haze/fog of late. Adjusted diet recently and will need to change it up at the gym. I weigh 209lb now, down from 260 on May 1, 2010. Pretty damn good end result...but I need to get back on track.

Once I get to 195lb, not sure what after this. I'm just cutting now, not bulking. Perhaps my goal after 195lb, is to focus on lowering body fat % and not just weight? Man I'll be looking great this summer!!

1. Eat less takeout.
2. Commit to a regular push-up/pull-up regimen.
3. Increase my trail running to at least 3 times a week barring inclement weather.
4. Not entirely H&F, but start running-and-gunning with my friends on the weekends. Should be a nice patch of PA wilderness we can use somewhere.
5. Get to sleep at a reasonable hour. :p

My plan is to get back into Stronglifts 5x5 until I do 1.5x bodyweight 5x5. I was at 1.1x bodyweight 3x5, and I completely lost all ambition when call of duty black ops came out lol.

Pretty sad really. I'm starting a new job at the end of the month and I will be traveling a lot, but I think this will help me overall because I will be in charge of food, and I won't have a girlfriend/friends distracting me every day.

Just need to find some gym's wherever I go. First place to look for a gym is Omaha, Nebraska.

Edit: Going for training in omaha and I'm an anytime fitness member luckily they have a ton of gyms there. Looks like it will work out great for me.

My goals:

1. Drop 25 pounds by May 28

2. Run 2080+ miles in 2011 - tracking via ontri and runningahead

3. Complete a VERY difficult, technical 50 mile trail race in 2011

4. Get back into 32 waist pants comfortably again

That's it for me. All totally doable.

Good luck with your goals guys.

1. Drop my weight down to #170. Weighed in at #187 this morning.

2. Start cooking. Fresh grad right out of school and I need to domesticate myself and start cooking my own meals. I figure that if I start doing it myself it will help with the weight loss.

3. Sub 6:45 2k row

4. Sub 18:00 5k row

Increase my 1 rep maxes:

Squat - 405+
Bench Press - 315
Deadlift - 495+
OH Press - 195+
Power Clean - 205+

If I manage to hit most of these, I'd like to drop some fat while maintaining most of my strength.

Cut 10 lbs of bodyfat, keeping lifts hopefully in their current 1RM range (+/- 5%)

Then, Deadlift 495 and OHP 195 by years end
