PSA: RESOLUTIONS = GOALS IN H&F ;)

I was pondering my 2010 New Year's Resolutions today and thought it would make a good thread. I pretty much bombed my 2009 resolutions, so I figured I'd try again this year :D I've learned that one aspect of myself is that I need really detailed plans if I'm going to make things happen long-term; that is, setting a goal and knowing what to do isn't good enough, I need a written plan broken down into day-by-day activities that I can follow if I'm not going to quit after a week. Otherwise my motivation just kind of dwindles.

Kaido's 2010 H&F Resolutions:

1. No sugar for a year
2. Complete my pushup program
3. Go Vegan for 3 months

I'm pretty much a sugarholic, so I'd like to try going off sugar for a year. Benefits being: improved skin, lower weight, better health, more money. Exceptions are my birthday, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. This will be an easy one because my wife signed up for this too, so I have a "buddy" to keep me in check (i.e. not let me keep crap in the house). She's not a sweettooth like me, so this should go well. Next I'd like to complete my pushup program, which is a progressive plan that culminates in 210 pushups a day. Takes about 9 months, then you just stay with it for the rest of your life. My dad does it and he's a pretty fit guy! Finally I'd like to go Vegan for 3 months. Nothing against animals, just interested in doing it for the energy aspect. I've experimented with Vegan food over the past 2 years and have found that it gives me a lot of energy. I got a pretty good book called "The Thrive Diet" that has a 3-month rotating Vegan meal plan by tri-athelete Brendan Brazier, so I already have a pre-made plan to follow. I'm keeping it simple and realistic this year. I'll also keep up my current meal plan (7 small meals a day).

How bout you? :)

BlackTiger's 2010 H&F Resolutions:

1. Get weight to 185. (163ish? now)
2. Hit a 1000 pound total on my three lifts (780ish now estimated)
3. Lean out to a low BF%, under 11.

I feel 1 and 2 are attainable by summer, if I neglect number 3, haha.

Latter then the former. I'm about to start a massive bulk, then cut and lean bulk. I want to get some muscle before I worry about leaning up.

1. Run 1000km
2. Do 15,000 pushups
3. Do 5000 chin/pull ups

All should be quite attainable but I haven't done them before, so I'll be happy. It'll just be a matter of keeping it steady.

Perhaps people should post how they did against last years resolutions too? I didn't make any last year though :)

1. Lose 20 pounds and manage to not lose much/any muscle mass.

2. Complete two key 50 mile races.
a. Finger Lakes Fifties - trail race
b. Can Lake 50 - road race around Canandaigua Lake, my birthplace

3. If that goes well, I may attempt a 100km trail race.

4. Begin prepping for a triathlon in 2011.

I don't do new year's resolutions. I make year-long goals and work on them. My goal was to get down to 300-320 pounds this year and I'm just below 320 now. Next year I will be below 250, that is my goal. Along the way i will have smaller goals.

As a student of astrology I always find new year's resoltuions funny. it always follows this pattern. The sun went from care-free saggitarius into hard-working capricorn yesterday on the solstice. Everyone starts thinking about the hard work they need to do. It's an instinct of surving winter. Everyone goes to the gym when they get back to work. By late January, the sun moves into aquarius, the sign of uniqueness and individuality. So people want to be more inventive and intellectual, and find reasons to stop going to the gym.

I know most people on AT think astrology is crap but most people don't understand it and haven't studied it. I've studied it for a while and it works.

I predict that most people don't make it past late January with their new year's resolutions. And if they do, they change their routine a lot by then and lose their hard-nose edge.

Mine mainly have to do with my bad eating habits.

1. Max 1 cup coffee per day and no other caffeine sources.
2. Eat fruit or veggies with every major meal (B, L, D). Small snacks can still be dairy only (yogurt or cottage cheese).
3. Improve my recent (10 months) 5k time of 24:30 (massively embarrassing)
4. Beer only on 1x/week

I'm going to have twins in April, so maintaining exercise habits is going to be important since if I stop I doubt I will start again.

I'm still abiding by my New Year's resolution from 2005. It's not about the stars, it's about will power and commitment.

Oh I agree, and I would also say it's not about your new year's resolution, but your willpower and commitment. Making the personal resolution is the key, I pretty much made my resolution this last July.

Astrology isn't good about coming up with personal correlations that fit everyone, that's the misconception people get from seeing horoscopes in newspapers and now crappy websites. It can be made personal but that's complicated. It's actually quite the impersonal study of trends in the yearly cycles and seeing if there is a statistical correlations. See, I'm different in that I research and question it. It's a lot like a weatherman who predicts it will snow in december, but can't he guarantee it will snow in your town and freeze your driveway, even if he can that's guesswork.

Basically all I'm saying is I would love to see some statistical data on gym attendance in January and see if it drops off sharply around the 21st, because I bet it would. But that would be hard data to get ahold of. Now it could be rationalized in a lot of ways, like college kids getting more work in class, and work getting tougher around review time, whatever the excuse. But that's just as good as an explanation of that it is in everyone's collective consciousness because it's winter and a new year. My second point is I find it funny that people don't start talking about it (also making threads) until now, like after yesterday. They could have 5 days ago, but now after the solstice people plan their new year's resolutions seriously.

I agree it isn't about the stars, except that one big star called the sun that gives us all life. Western astrology talks about the stars but really it's even divisions from the spring equinox. Most of the 12 signs have a lot in common with activities for that time of year. And since the start of winter is when the days start getting longer, people feel ready to start anew. But since it's cold out they work hard because they need to make it through winter.

I would say it is about the stars, or at least about timing which we track with systems based off the motions of the stars so we can predict things like seasons. The sun especially is one star we can't live without, so that is why it symbolizes life in astrology.

I realize I'm barking up the wrong tree on the AT forums but I like to, it keeps me honest. I get sick of people who automatically believe in astrology as much as the rest of you guys. I just have a taste and knack for it and I like learning. It's a mental/emotional/spiritual workout all rolled into one.

I'm not done with this year yet! I still have a week or so to try to nail a few more PR's and will formulate my 2010 goals after that.
