I can wager all my money that if I followed a cop who ran the light, they'd swing around and pull me over for doing it.

Is there a reason for it that can maybe help sway my opinion that they're abusing their power?

If they're heading to a priority call, probably not. However, is it still illegal for you to follow a marked emergency vehicle (with activated emergency equipment, no less) through a red light? Yep.

Ive seen cops do it when responding to a call and other times Ill see them parked at the donut shop. My guess its 50/50 which case it is.

Edit: And yeah I've had one almost turn me into a grease spot on the pavement with that stupidity. One day coming home from work on a three lane highway. I'm in the middle lane and I need to get over to the right to go to the bank. No other cars around me. I check my right mirror and there's nothing, I reach over put my blinker on and I'm about to start pulling over and whoosh a cop flies by me doing about 75 in a 45. Scared the living hell out of me. A quarter of a second later and I would have had 4000lbs of crown vic embedded in the ass of my car. No lights, no siren, no nothing. Incredibly stupid.
I can see no siren for a so called "silent" response but turn the friggin lights on at least. Whoever is robbing whatever will not see you coming 5 miles away with your lights on.

At night on the highway a cop, going over the speed limit with no lights, behind you, who's in the far left lane, and proceeds to ride your ass, then flash his brights a few times until you move over and let him through.
Like I said it happened to me and I saw it happen to someone else. In my situation I was passing 2 cars who were in the middle lane. I couldn't have gotten over if I'd wanted to, so I'm not sure where he wanted me to go. I was so pissed when I realized it was a cop doing that.

WTF? If you were in the left lane and a car comes up from behind you, you are in violation of the law if you don't move right! Slower traffic, keep right. You say you were passing two cars at the time, but how long would that take? The time between when you should have noticed the faster-moving car behind you and when he came up and flashed his brights would have been more than sufficient to make your pass and move over (or stay in the center or right lane until he passed, then pass yourself), unless he was going WAAY over the limit. If you were just cruising the left lane, fine, but you gotta monitor the traffic behind you to make sure you're not blocking anyone. Whether or not they're going the limit.

When the cops come up behind me, I move to the right, and they continue on, I'm just happy they're not pulling me over.

So if zanejohnson was acquitted, his opinion would be worth more? How many points off my opinion do I get for a speeding ticket? Do I lose significantly more value as a human being for possession of crack over possession of powder cocaine? Inquiring minds wish to know.

i dont think it's a big deal...

consider it a perk of the job... like if you work at a retailer, u get a discount...

so if u're a cop, u get to run a red light or two.... no biggie

i love that the people (who crave any excuse to use bash all police) paint a picture of a cop flying through an intersection with his lights on, while other cars crash and blow up all around him, just to go to a dunkin' donuts.

Actual scenario though? Its late at night (as people have stated earlier) and you would rather be driving around your beat than waiting at every stop light on an empty street.

If you actually think they don't look on either side of the intersection before crossing, you're an idiot.

You just confirmed what I was going to say. It's fine and dandy for cops to break the law. What everyday citizens get ticketed and/or arrested for, is A-OK for law enforcement to do.

Horseshit.

It's been said that there's a fine line between cops and criminals. I fully believe this to be true.

The worst thing about it is that this type of behavior by police is not necessary and the fix is simple. Quit thinking you're above the law.

One time i was behind a cop at a long red light. He eventually just drove through. So i followed him through it. Nothing happened.

I tried that same thing, except it was a right on a red light marked for no right turn. 2am, no one on the road, got tired of sitting and made the turn. Got pulled over and ticketed by the cop sitting in the parking lot on the other side of a tree that I missed. I had important shit to do to but the fine didn't pay itself.

I just think it's funny for those ppl who really revere the cops as if they're some sort of a better being.

They're people just like you and me. They couldn't go to college, so they became a pedestrain cop, making $40K for rest of their life.

I don't antagonize the cops either. They serve our community and protect us to have a civil life.

But keep in mind that they're just people. I don't particularly think they uphold any higher standards of morals or ethics than any of us.

When you see a cop doing that questionable flashing lights crap, it's probably because they simply can. Sometimes they abuse the power, sometimes they do not. Simple as that.

Slower traffic should keep right, however if I'm passing cars while ii'm say doing 73 mph, and said cars are doing 65ish, should i speed up even faster for the jack ass behind me? At that point i don't want to go faster b/c i don't feel safe driving that fast. As soon as I"m almost done passing whatever ii'm passing, i but my signal on, clear the vehicle and switch lanes.

Acutally though, my car starts to vibrate quite a bit to the point the rearview mirror becomes useless and the steering wheel vibrates like hell once i get to about 80/82. Therefore i try not to go that fast when passing people if i can do it at a lower speed and still try to satisfy the jag off behind me who want to do 85+ mph.

Sure, nobody gets hurt when a cop runs a red light after looking both ways... But Liberty does.

Then again, this country became unfree when it was established that the president could violate the Constitution.

Pats fans are a joke by comparison, just like their teams history. Penis envy FTL. Pitt fans travel better than any other franchise, and few represent their city so well.

CherryTwist - I live in downtown St. Louis and have to say there was an impressive turnout of Steeler fans.

We actually went to the Blues vs Red Wings, but I was really impressed with the Pittsburgh fans both before and after the game.

By comparison, there was a brawl across the street when the Packers were in town last week.

Silent response most likely unless it was the north side of Pitt, I can't blame them for blasting through that area.

What I find entertaining is that, somehow, people have come to the conclusion that there are only two possibilities:

- asshole cops taking advantage of their power (fuck pigs!); or
- selfless individuals dashing off to save the day in a situation so dangerous that putting on their lights could cause the downfall of western civilization (oh, those valiant heroes!)

As always, the truth is somewhere in the goddamned middle. Sometimes they really have to get to a call with no lights and no sirens. Sometimes, they don't want to be bothered to sit at a light.

Christ, stop making it more than what it is, talking about how this is endemic of everything that's wrong with the police. That's just as stupid as the people who are saying every time a cop does it, it's perfectly justified and fuck you for challenging them.

I love when people apply black and white logic to a gray world.

Cops aren't above the law. They need to wait at the lights (instead of putting everyone at risk) when its not an emergency.

That depends on the jurisdiction. That isn't true around here.
