What's up with cops turning their lights on to go through a red light...

I see this all the time and I can't help but wonder if it's just that they feel they don't have to wait at lights like everybody else or what? In all fairness this happens mostly (it seems to me) at night when there aren't too many cars there, but still... I can wager all my money that if I followed a cop who ran the light, they'd swing around and pull me over for doing it.

Is there a reason for it that can maybe help sway my opinion that they're abusing their power?

I don't know. But something that I've seen recently (a few days ago) and that has happened to me. At night on the highway a cop, going over the speed limit with no lights, behind you, who's in the far left lane, and proceeds to ride your ass, then flash his brights a few times until you move over and let him through.
Like I said it happened to me and I saw it happen to someone else. In my situation I was passing 2 cars who were in the middle lane. I couldn't have gotten over if I'd wanted to, so I'm not sure where he wanted me to go. I was so pissed when I realized it was a cop doing that.

a few months ago i was trying to get on the highway, from the access road off of the interstate (they intersect) well im sitting there, at the stop sign, just about to let out the clutch and turn left across the two oncoming lanes, which are empty... and here comes a cop, over the hill which blocked my view of him, without his lights on, going at least 70mph (in a 35mph zone) and if i would have not seen him at the last minute, he would have sideswiped the hell out of me.... there was no reason for him to be going that fast, ESPECIALLY without his lights on....

i got on the cell phone and called in a complaint right then and there.

Just a day ago when I was in LA driving through downtown at around 10 pm, a cop in the opposite lane flashes his lights right in front of me. I pull over to the right, and... he crosses the double yellow and parks in a civic center garage. WTF. The street was devoid of any traffic, and yet he couldn't wait 4 seconds for me to pass and do his turn without any lights at all.

a lot of cops abuse their powers, I remember seeing a cop zoom threw a red light and fly into the Circuit City parking lot I was in, he pulled up directly in front of the store where those pylons are at to keep people from ramming their cars into the store. I thought "oh shit maybe there's a guy with a gun in the store or something" so I walk up by the store to check it out, he comes out about 2 minutes later holding a hands free earpiece for his cell phone and joked to his partner "boy it was important I got this!"

I laughed at his urgency to get a cell phone accessory, too bad they didn't respond so fast when I worked at a liquor store and was held at gun point.
