What's up with 7900GT(X) Availability?

Not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but NVIDIA's "hard launch" of the 7900's appears be a lot like the 7800GTX 512 launch were there is availability on day 1, but not much after that. Just about every (r)etailer is out of stock. Is this just due to abnormally high demand, or is due to a lack of supply in real quantities. For comparison, I don't think I've ever seen all the X1900XT(T)'s sold out anywhere since they launched.

...yeah, yeah, I know I already got one, but that was just luck on my part. I happen to have Monday off from work, and I decided to see what Monarch had in stock at their retail showroom. They only had very few of the non-OC'ed eVGA 7900GTXes (no XFX available at all) and only the very mildly OC'ed (overpriced) BFG 7900GT's in stock, all the other GT's were sold out. A buddy of mine just signed up for a step-up through eVGA from a 7800GT to a 7900GT CO, and apparently eVGA won't have a card for him for 4-8 weeks.

Yeah, so far none of the step ups to a 7900GT from eVGA has been fulfilled . . . :(

At this point, I'm even considering cancelling my step up and just getting the $299 X1800XT . . .

Hard launch my ass.
You'd be hard pressed to find them in the UK.
Those places that do have them in stock are charging insane amounts.

I think to answer your question, high-end cards will NEVER be mass produced, as their costs are way too high to make much margins. Until the costs come down, then they should be able to, but this will never happen with bleeding edge technology.

Sorry to hear about your friend's wait for eVGA, honestly new tech will be out by the time most people get their step-ups. LOL.

Not nVIDIA's fault, and you damn well know it.

UK retailers rarely have the stock that the states do, so don't try to dodge facts.

eVGA is holding back on their step-up because they're getting flooded. That's all.

You can def find them all over the place from what I can see... Sure not brands like eVGA or XFX but there are plenty of MSI, BFG etc that I have seen...

NVIDIA had no problems mass producing and supplying the 7800GTX (256) and GT, so why would they decide to stop mass producing high end cards now? My guess is that they had more time to stock up on 7800's because ATI didn't have anything close to resembling a competetive card for months. My comment is more about whether we can expect more "hard launches" like this in the future. Does hard launch mean, "get launch day, or not at all"...?

Exactly. Most UK retailers had stock of 20pcs of each. Stock is reasonably replenished one a week/fortnight. If demand outstrips supply there's nothing they can do. It's not like they're mainstream cards!

1) Every single one of the 7900's for sale on eVGA.com is listed as backordered, so it's not just their step-up stock but retail as well.

2) Demand outstripping the supply is obviously the problem... The question is can NVIDIA meet the demand or are we in for another shortage?

The reason why this is a concern is because these are supposed to be hard launches with immediate availability. IMO, continuous availability thereafter is implied in the concept of a hard launch as well. Now, if this is just a short slump, no big deal, but if these cards dry up and won't be easily found for months than it's BS and not a hard launch at all IMO.

Its been less then two weeks...give it time. Of course they are all sold out, there was a mad rush for them. You know how many people bought one/two? ALOT and up to 5 days after Newegg had the GTXs in stock, they werent sold the first day.

Wait all you want for the 7900GTX, I'll be enjoying my X1900XT I just bought (STILL IN STOCK if you want to be smart and go the ATi route) for $439. Not ONCE since the X1900 launch has newegg been OOS on all X1900XT/X's, meanwhile nVidia cant supply enough to keep them in stock for a week.

My 7900GT Extreme Edition is on a FedEx truck out for delivery right now. I'd say if I can get one out here in BFE, TX less than a week after launch that it must be fairly available.

Hopefully, that second batch comes soon. If not, we will end up with an accordian effect between supply, demand, and retail price gougers that won't benefit the consumer.

Some of the card prices already rose between last Friday and this Monday... I'm sure this was because they were selling so well.

A buddy of mine got quoted 4-8 weeks by eVGA for his 7900GT CO step-up. I'm sure it depends on where you are in that queue.

I'm having no trouble finding 7900's in stock in the UK and as for prices, the UK is well known for higher prices than elsewhere. The EU is looking into the artificially high prices of products in the UK.

Considering how long the 7900's have been out and the high demand it's not surprising they've sold out in some places. Just goes to show how popular nVidia cards still are.

Uhm, perhaps I'm wrong about this but I would say that ATI cards are not in the same demand as the NVidia stuff is. SLi is much more mature than Crossfire, thus enthusiasts are not buying one card, but two. Think of how many NForce4 SLi boards have been sold this year. That's ALOT of video cards.

Look at products like the XBox 360 (still on backorder for most retailers) and the Apple Video Ipod (demand has fallen in line with supply finally). It took those products a while before they could be bought on store shelves and the 360 still cannot. Obviously, NVidia video cards, though popular, are not an XBox 360 so it won't ever be that dire, but they literally supply the world with this stuff. And in the first 2 weeks of launch, it may be hard to find them since everyone and their dog is trying to get 2 of them.

SLI/CF is just for the larger e-penis IMO, theres not a single game (besides F.E.A.R. w/ SS, which are ugly anyway) that wont run smoothly @ 1600x1200 w/ 4xAA/16xAF. For $439, I'll take the X1900XT w/ Adaptive AA & HQAF over 2x 7900GTX's for $1000~ anyday. The only real reason to get SLI is for a higher 3D Mark score IMO.

That would be foolish ..the performance advantage of a 7900GT will be worth the wait, assuming its not to long.

What are you talking about?
The X1900 range were in ample stock from the word go.
I wouldnt have had a problem with Nvidia about stock issues if they hadnt actually went and told us all there would be ample stock readily available to all.
When asked if stock issues would mimick that of the GTX 512mb Nvidia were quick to spout the opposite would be the case.
If you ask me, in the UK it's been harder to get hold of the new G71 range then it was the GTX 512mb. Dont promise customers what you cant provide.
