books and movies aren't scary. it just depends on how much you want to get into the game. same thing if you want to immerse yourself in a good book or movie.

Clive Barker's Undying. The howlers were the worst.

Also Half-Life 2 (Ravenholm).

The zombie part of Return to Castle Wolfenstein was creepy, too. The part when you fall through the floor.

Another vote for Clive Barker's Undying.

Doom3 made me jump a number of times too.

Truly the scariest games though are Call of Duty and COD2 ... the sounds, and the fact that it actually happened, and was worse than what the game portrays brings home the horror of war.

System Shock 2. Those damn Cyborg Midwives. And the little touches. First game I'd ever played where running across your erswhile shipmate's body after his hasty, improvised suicide was a distinct possibility.

diablo 1 - for anyone that played, specifically levels 6/7, where the acid hound boss and a minion pack would spawn. almost instant death for a warrior, and in D1 if you die your gear falls on the ground. not to mention the atmosphere was 1000000x better than d2:)

I just finished FEAR and it's not a scary game. Occasionally, it's a bit creepy, and things jumping out at you at just the right time will make you jump/squirm in your seat, but it's not really scary. It is a fun game, especially when you play through it a second time.

The game that probably made me jump the most is playing the Marine in Aliens VS Predator II.

A toss up between Doom 3 and F.E.A.R

Another game that gave me the chills back in the day was Undying. That game was probably the best game I have played that not many people even heard of.

Flashlight tag or hide and seek late at night in the woods, probably. Paintball can be scary, too.

I remember the first time someone said HL2 was scary I was like "Oh what BS, that game was not scary at all" ..... then they said the word Ravenholm, and the memories came flooding back. So, Half Life 2 gets a vote.

F.E.A.R. I've been playing alot, and the random images of dead people and the creepy ass little girl are definately doing it for me.

But Doom 3 wins for me, if for nothing else the keeping you in the dark thing. Granted having the ability to use the flashlight and gun at the same time would make sense, not allowing it made the game so much creepier.

Though those little teleporting invisible bastards in F.E.A.R. scare the crap outta me.

Doom 3 with all my friends...darkened room, 5.1 surround, oh man. scary as hell!

havent played fear because of comp limitations (see sig for obvious reasons), and HL2 wasnt that scary for me.
