in Dallas, most of Oak Cliff and around Fair Park are areas where you don't want your car to break down...

Pretty much any non-touristy part of DC. Fortunately it is 40 miles from us.

You have any idea what kind of area Monroe, MI is by chance? I'm gonna be heading out there to meet someone in about a month.

Yeah - Over the Rhine is insane.

I live near Dayton, OH and I would say that west of downtown is where the newest "knife and gun club" members are made on a regular basis - 20 murders so far! Go team!

I live in North Ridgeville, OH (about 10 miles west of the Cleveland line). It is by no means Ghetto here but if I had to pick the worst spot, it would be the trailer park up the street. My Dad lived in that park when he was 4 and it was GHETTO back then! There are trailers in that park that are over 60 years old!

As far as Cleveland goes, ANYTHING between downtown and East 200th over to Broadway is just plain GHETTO. I worked that area for 2 years and there is not a bright spot anywhere. Cleveland as a whole is just sad. I believe it is on the list of poorest areas in the country. Detroit is about the same (maybe a little worse). The thing is that the outlying suburbs are booming but it will only be a matter of time before the urban crawl catches up. Many people who live in the burbs work in the city so if the city is dying, the burbs aren't far behind.

Now, from what I hear, Columbus is booming (a lot of headquarters for large companies which is always a good thing). Not long ago, Columbus was in real bad shape. I guess it helps to be the capital. Wouldn't want the politicians working in a ghetto would we?!?

Not exactly a ghetto but there was an open drug scene in my city until circa ten years ago. The nicknamed "Needle Park" was in foreign media, too. It was closed 13 years ago. Prostitution and some drug trade are now concentrated on one street but I would hardly call it a ghetto. There are some low income areas but in a perimeter of 10 miles (perhaps even in whole Switzerland) there is no location where I would be scared to go alone at 4'o clock in the morning.

Straight up. North Phil is still missing whole city blocks. It's crazy.

In Boston it's Mattapan where I was born/raised, or Roxbury (yes, Roxbury's MLK Blvd. is nothin nice), or Dorchester. Though parts of the inner-city are on a serious turnaround as it becomes more and more trendy to live within a 5min walk of everything you want rather than commute crosstown. South End is a prime example of this. 15yrs ago nobody wanted to touch it with a 10ft pole, now brownstones are being converted to multi-unit condos that sell for $500k per.

Sadly I had to move outside Boston because I want to own not rent, and the market is crazy overinflated right now.

My neighborhood. Seriously. North Minneapolis is pretty much the craphole of Minnesota.

Edit: I guess there are some areas in South Minneapolis that are pretty bad as well.

Where's the DC people to represent Southeast? Surprised Anacostia hasn't come up in this thread yet.

I was in DC for a year and I thought getting a cab in Boston after dark was bad... in DC I could not get a cab, period. During my time down there (around '99-'00), an average of two cab drivers per month were being murdered. As a result, young black men did a lot of unexpected metro riding or walking...

mmm.. well.. here in "Da Boogie Down" Bronx we have some choice neighborhoods though most of the worst ones are in ..yes...the South Bronx. Hoods like Hunts Point, Morrisania, University Heights...etc..plenty of crap around filled with nice gangs like the bloods, crips and latin kings and I'm sure many others.

Luckily I never lived in a terrible neighborhood and have never been in any trouble so yay for me.

I'm in Toronto and it's not as ghetto here as places in the states.

But a real /thread ghetto is the ghetto of Sao Paulo Brasil. No ghettos compare to that :)
