What's the biggest job YOU have ever done to your car?

Dropped the transmission and replaced the clutch on my 85 S-10 pickup. Replaced the head and valve cover gaskets on my '68 C-10 pickup. Replaced brake pads/shoes/drums/rotors and brake lines on a 91 Astro and pads and shoes on a '99 Malibu.

Replaced the rear pads on a '95 Kia Sephia. It was hell, HELL I tell ya!

At different times changed; radiator, starter motor and gas tank.

pulling my old 88 5.0 stangs motor and having it bored and stroked.. 347 power baby..

did a T5 rebuild too soon after when the above motor casued a 2nd gear failure..

only took a weekend to to the motor in and out..

Anyway, I've put in a dash kit for my cd player, added infinity speakers(need to add two more) and got a new tire. I now need to find a pair shocks that won't completely rape my wallet.

I can spend 1000 bucks on an upgrade for my computer. For a chevy 350, I can buy... new rotating assembly, camshaft and bam, I gots me a fun project (that may or may not get me horsepower).

Working on cars isn't cheaper than computers, unless you're buying bleeding edge gear as soon as it comes out.

I'm building one engine, another is running well in the bus, refurbishing a set of Carroll Shelby wheels, reupholstering the interior, etc. And when those are done, I start on the paint and body.

lol hes on crack huh. the heads i need for my 5.0 are TFS and they are 1000.00 BARE.. and unworked..

then have a valve job put on them.. good rockers.. and CHING $$$$

not to mention the Cam and blower i want to go with them..
say hello to another 6k...

cars are money pits especally fast cars.. casue you always want soemthing to make it better..

always starts with small bolt ons.. then comes the stroke and bore.. then the turbos or superchargers.. and on and on and on..
pretty soon that 4k old car has over 40k in it...
(or more) i know 5.0s around here that have prolly 80k in them if you add everything up.

I haven't done much personally on my current (Tahoe) but did replace a gasket that was leaking on my differential a few weeks ago.

I've helped out with pulling motors, putting in transmissions, replacing a radiator, rotors, brakes, etc..

Stripped almost the entire front end, Por15'd it, then reassembled with a manual tranny instead of auto.

Amps, speakers subs and a Deck. Oh, i also put in XM Radio. Not much, though I am planning on having my 4th and 5th gears reground on my tranny to lower RPMs at high speeds (at 80mph I'm hitting 3900RPMs).

I've changed a timing chain on a Mopar V6.
I've installed a shift kit in an automatic tranny.
I've changed out axle oil seals.
I've pressed out u-joints (and pressed new ones in!!!)
I've replaced a half-shaft
I stripped the paint, primed, and painted a truck.

Carbs baffle me

Swapping the engine on a Bug is extremely easy. I got it down where I get the one out and put a new one in in less than an hour. Tip: cut the rear apron piece right along the seams, then drill holes in the overlapping seams (lining them up precisely), and bolt the apron back into place. Now you can R&R the engine without even having to jack the car up (but make sure to put a jack under engine of course).

Dual carbs baffle everyone. Good luck with those.


The biggest job I've done to my current car is a turbo swap, followed by spring/strut replacement.

Complete teardown and rebuild. We are currently doing everything ourselves minus the sandblasting, paint, and the obvious machine work. (Too bad I can't afford these toys)

on my first car i started from boxes, then added a transmission and engine as i didn't get one witht he car. On my truck i have changed teh bodies completely, changed & rebuilt trannies, rebuilt axles. pretty much everything possible. Just way to costly, especially my first car since now i want to re do it again and turn it into a SCCA type car
