Muay Thai according to my UFC buddy.

Muay Thai is very effective.

Ong-bak showed everyone in theater how l33t Muay Thai is.

lol exactly. i need to condition my elbow for like the next 20 years to do some damage to one's skull. and he was doing most of it after leaping 30 fee in the air.

Plus if you pull that crap on me or anyone else in a state with concealed carry licenses you will be summarily sent to your maker. The last time a guy tried to pull martial arts crap on me I picked up a wrought iron patio chair and hit him over the head with it. He did not get up for a while.

Jedi mind tricks

I've heard Tai Kwan Do is the best.

best: a peaceful being doesn't magnetically attract physical fighting situations into his life.

It's spelled Taekwondo, and yes, it kicks ass.

MCMA. The Marine Corps Martial Art.
Other than that, a shotgun is very good for close combat.

Have you ever taken any kind of martial arts? It's great to teach you discipline, but it won't do you any good if you get into a street fight.

Shuri Ryu teaches alot of disarming and disabling techniques. That would be (actually it was/is) my art of choice. Then again, you could carry a Katana with you everywhere...

To all of those who are praising Tae Kwon Do, you're wrong. That's infact the worst type of martial arts you could use if you were to depend on one during a street fight. I took it for eight years.

rex-kwan-do. nobody will want a roundhouse kick to the face while you are wearing your american flag sweat pants.

I've taken a number of martial arts, and the best by far (of the ones I've experienced) is Krav Maga. Very well-balanced, effective, and to the point.

Attempting to use TKD to defend yourself will get your ass kicked.

so knowing the most effective way to strike, block, twist joints, distract your opponent by throwing something at him, does nothing for you? ;)

So let's say a guy draws a knife on me. Will I do better if I know how to block the knife and subdue him in the process, or if I don't know any of the above? ;)

krav maga is considered a very good one. it was "designed" by the IDF specifically for self-defense.

None unless you like jail time.

Trust me, the cops will do all they can to "investigate" if the fight could have been avoided. To prove self defense it takes more then just "he swung first".

Aikido. steven seagal uses it, it looks BS but its VERY VERY effective if used for self-defense purposes. joint manipulation, balance attacks, etc. someone mentioned ninjutsu, that is seriously hardcore and takes many years to master.

Nutjitsu. Which is simply the art of kicking someone in the nuts really really hard and then running away. ;)

you try grappling or wrestling someone in a bar/street and you are asking to get kicked in the head while you are on the ground trying to make someone give up.
