What's the best martial art for REAL self-defense?

There's not really ONE single best style. It would be more beneficial to study several and take the best from each, since all have their own different philosophies and techniques which are appropriate for different situations.

On the other hand, I hear guns usually work real well.

MCMAP (Marine Corps Martial Arts Program) ;)

My preferred method is Concealed Carry Handgun-Fu though. But since you don't live in a free state, that I am sure isn't an option.

you gotta be strong to do that, otherwise you'll break your shin in half trying to give somoene bigger a shot.

plus hes asking how to best go against street fights, which if you ever take down/get taken down, its likely they'll have a buddy or two with em ready to stomp your brains out.

Or kick boxing or boxing.

They are the easiest to pick up and get up to a 'level' that is easiest to use for self defense.

But no real one 'style' is the best, learn a variety and pick the bits that work from each for you. Remember you can't kick as well if your short or don't have the mobility in your hips and legs.

Practically anything against the average Joe on the street. Because if you stick to it, you will be conditioned and have some skills.

Learn how to throw punches correctly.

Wrestling is real good.

Learn some Jujitsu submittions.

The bad part about all of it is, to really get good, you have to go into a ring and receive punches to the head and body every day or you will be knocked out easily. Then all your training is for naught.

It's kind of an all or nothing proposition.

they use it on UFC, so its gotta be good.
Do you think it would break up Canadian PS3 riots?

They use Brazilian Jiu Jitsu not the classical Jiu Jitsu from Japan.

The ground game is VERY effective for one on one encounters. Not so effective giving your back when you have mount and his budy kicks or hammes a bottle behind your head...I wouldn't go to ground in a fight on a street with no rules. Giving your back open is not good and the fight probably won't be a 1 Vs 1 anyway.

UFC/Pride/ 1 vs 1 guranteed fights you are safe going to ground. You will dominate your opponent very easily it isn't even funny.
