I really think you should wait until the next major generation of GPUs before you upgrade. You currently have two current-gen upper-midrange cards.

What's the rest of your rig like? What CPU are you using?

Really if you're intent on doing anything with your current setup, the only thing I would consider would be a pair of 9600GTs as you may in fact come close to breaking even (and you'll cut down on your power consumption/heat output).

Essentially I'm saying that for you it's "worth waiting" for R700/G200 no matter what (almost). :Q

what *i* am trying to say .... those of US with roughly "ultra" performance ... have very LITTLE reason to upgrade for $650 unless it is *significant*
-better then 2 GTs in SLi might make it worthwhile ... in my opinion

if you are coming from a 7900GTX, it is probably a well deserved and very bang-for-buck upgrade .. that is, IF you are coming from 7900GTX


edit ... now IF the GX2 were really ~$500, most of us would upgrade
-but then nvidia probably has a limited run if they are gonna charge so damn much

At $600, I don't see it having much bang-for-the-buck (if any!).

As far as your rig goes, I would get a new HDD with the new 320/334gb platters (WD or Samsung, take your pick). Then I would install Vista-64 on it.

After that, I would go to a market to buy a piggy bank. You need to save up for a big-screen TV.

Why do i want Vista 64 - now? ... it is currently SLOWER in 99.9% of games than Vista 32 ... i uninstalled it last week

Next year Big TV LCDs will be half price .. or less

Oh, as for Vista-64: You can use more memory! It can't be that much slower than Vista-32...

I think you should go for the HDD. Maybe you could try the 250gb drives in RAID just for fun.

Vista32- vs. Vista64-bit OS Showdown *Done!*

i used a 4GB gaming rig and also posted some CrossFire numbers ... Vista 64 is OK - no issues whatsoever - but if you are a performance whore like me, i think 32bit is the best way for right now.

and i HAD my 250 GB Seagates in RAID-0 .. the supposed performance increase is overstated for gamers ... i am waiting for solid state 1TB drives for a real upgrade

From the look of it, you gained a bit in 32-bit mode but nothing overly impressive.

I was under the impression that XP and Vista (32/64) were all pretty much at parity at this point, driver-wise (with XP being a tiny bit quicker).

Yes, remember the benchmarking we did back - in May '07? .. there was parity back then between Vista-32 and XP-32 with both my 2900xt and my 8800GTS-640oc

i am only stating my own personal and possibly peculiar to you, reasons why Vista 32 stays and Vista 64 is getting the boot [off]

Only two game i already played - one ancient, one new - actually benefit under a 64-bit OS - obviously 64-bit games - FC and Hg:L

when Crysis is finally optimized, it will also run about 20% or so faster than 32-bit ... and in 3 years, when i upgrade to MS' next 64-bit OS, games will hopefully be routinely ported and/or written for 64-bit so unlike today.
