What's a Nice, Classy Dress Watch?

Spooner

Lifer
I think my range would be of the Movado, Rado, Tag Haeur, Bulova type brands.

Price range $600-1,000

Any thoughts/suggestions?

A good Bulova shouldn't run you more than $400. I have 3 of them. For your price range, I'd get a Tag. I've never liked men's Movado watches.

I'd go for a Rado. I like some of their classy designs. As for Tag, well I'm biased about not liking their designs and thinking their not worth the price.

There seriously cannot be any real difference between a $200 (or less) and a $1000 watch.

You obviously have more money than you know what to do with.

You're just asking for a beating around here if you start telling people you want to spend $1K on a watch... they just don't understand our sickness...

Come with me, my friend, and I'll show you the promised land, and it is called..... www.timezone.com

Just like there is no difference between a $10000 car and a $40000 one?

Correct. I would contend that there is no difference in the basic functionality between a $10k and a $40k car.

So why do they exist?

Because there are people in the world with more money than brains.

It's also not really a fair comparison between an apparatus that tells time and one used for transportation.

Telling time is basically telling time.

Transportation has many facets (e.g. comfort, speed, economy, etc.)

Oh come now. Prove you have one and try to come up with one more rational reason. One with a little less venom in it. Try, just for me? 😉

Watches in this class are seen more as luxury jewelry. It's not even all that more exact with time. It's appreciated for it's construction and whatnot. So yes, these watches are now getting to, "I'll buy it because I have the money to" category but to say that transportation has many facets such as comfort, speed, economy, etc.. and imply a watch doesn't has me thinking you don't really know the appreciation about watches.

For example, I could care less about what I drive, but (assuming I had the money)I'd rather get a Patek Phillipe. And believe me, there's a world of difference to a Casio digitals to Patek Phillipe Grand Complications, especially if you look at say, skeleton watches (my own personal favorite type of watches).

trying not to be arrogant, but all of those brands suck. forget the brands.. if you want a nice classy watch, get a round case, simple face design (no chronometer diver bezel BS) with date, and a leather strap (though bracelet is okay)

I really wasn't looking to get into a "expensive vs. non-expensive" watch discussion. I was given an award from work and would like to spend it on a nice watch, and as people have mentioned in this thread it's more about style and luxury than precision

Just because you can't find the value in a luxury watch doesn't mean it's not there. You don't appreciate the qualities of a fine watch, and that's fine. Do you appreciate the qualities of a fine wine? Not everyone can appreciate the difference between a $10 bottle of wine and a good $100 bottle.

There is a lot more to watches than you probably realize. There's a whole community of people that are ultimately watch enthusiasts. They look for a beautifully designed movement in the same way as someone would lust over a vintage car.

Sorry for contributing to the "expensive vs. non-expensive" discussion.

Anyway, what I'd probably do with that money is head over to TimeZone and look through their sub-$5000 for sale forums. There are a lot of nice vintage watches that you can probably pickup near your price range. I'd probably look for an older Omega in good condition, but that's me.

i would look for a nice preowned omega.. or an older rolex.

btw, i just bought a new 2tone rolex submariner... it is awesome.
