I think my range would be of the Movado, Rado, Tag Haeur, Bulova type brands.

Price range $600-1,000

Any thoughts/suggestions?

rolexx of course.

Longines are very nice watches, i have one circa 1986 that was my great-grandfathers
This is more personal opinion than anything else but, do NOT by a Tag Heur watch, their customer service sucks and i refuse do deal with company that is so elitist that the people that answer their phones have a condescending attitude

$1000 gets you a lot of watch (or a lot of watches).

two of my watches (it's a bad photo)

The one on the left is a Ball and is at the top end of your budget. The one on the right is an Invicta and can be had for ~$100. both are nice, but if you held them both in your hands, it would be easy to tell which one cost more.

What you really have to do is ask yourself what you want out of this watch and what you call a dress watch. You let me know the answers to those questions, and I'll recommend some watches.

Here is a pre-emptive suggestion: Hamilton Jazzmaster

There seriously cannot be any real difference between a $200 (or less) and a $1000 watch.

You obviously have more money than you know what to do with.

Just like there is no difference between a $10000 car and a $40000 one?

Correct. I would contend that there is no difference in the basic functionality between a $10k and a $40k car.

So why do they exist?

Because there are people in the world with more money than brains.

It's also not really a fair comparison between an apparatus that tells time and one used for transportation.

Telling time is basically telling time.

Transportation has many facets (e.g. comfort, speed, economy, etc.)

nice watches are in the same category as jewelery... i dont see how that means people who buy em have more money than brains

Just because you can't find the value in a luxury watch doesn't mean it's not there. You don't appreciate the qualities of a fine watch, and that's fine. Do you appreciate the qualities of a fine wine? Not everyone can appreciate the difference between a $10 bottle of wine and a good $100 bottle.

There is a lot more to watches than you probably realize. There's a whole community of people that are ultimately watch enthusiasts. They look for a beautifully designed movement in the same way as someone would lust over a vintage car.

The wine is also a bad example. All wine starts out low...

Stylistically, that might not be the type of thing you want, but imo it's more interesting than just your normal out-of-the-box watch.

my vintage dress watch

It cost me ~$120 including the brand new strap. It's a great conversation piece as well as being a nice watch as it is the same model Edmund Hillary wore when he climbed Everest (ignore Rolex's hype to the contrary)

Nice vintage dress watches can very had VERY cheaply on eBay and even factoring in the cost of a service can be great values and timeless in the looks.

Here are a few nice specimens from a dealer:
Omega
Wittnauer Chronograph
Cyma

If by that you mean in a cellar, then yes you are right. Otherwise, you know nothing of wine.

ever heard of "inside a pocket"?

very nice and classy. ill pull out a palm pilot 650cwzw when i need to check the time. ill match the casing color to my tie.

Just FYI, many people will tell you that a dress watch can only be one with a leather band while a sport watch can have a metal band. I know Jame Bond wears an Omega Seamaster with a tuxedo, but there it is.

Wearing a dive watch as a dress watch is a new phenomenon. That said, it has become perfectly acceptable to wear a nice dive watch in a formal setting. FYI - a true dress watch can have a bracelet, but the classic style is certainly with a strap.

classic dress watch with either

Seiko's Spring Drives look awesome..

When I think of a classy watch, I think leather band, like the one Mwilding linked to.
