Buy some furnishings for my apartment (kitchen cart, rug, shelves/tv stand, and maybe an easel) and buy some PSN network cards. Should leave me with about 400 left to pay for spring birthday gifts.

For us, it'll cover the cost of one month's mortgage and utilities . . . Or I could buy lots of cheap Chinese-made goods :D

edit: Just to clarify--This is the recently-proposed tax rebate, not a tax refund.

how is the govt paying for this cash gift?

and i would blow it on coke and hookers, like most on ATOT

As of right now, we'd use it toward the cost of our wedding. Any other time, I'd use my share for a new bike frame.

Was going to post the same thing... I won't qualify.

Damm it. So if me and my wife make *>$110,000 we get nothing. And i work for the man... wait I am the man... well soemthing like that. And I don;t get anything. Oh wait I, like most americans, get stuck with Bushs/Republicans 9+trillion debt. So we all get something.

Bush's plan was to eliminate the portion of income tax paid in the 10% bracket while the Democrats wanted to make sure everyone (including those that don't actually pay anything) receives the money. From what I understand after reading it at CNN, everyone that basically files taxes and doesn't currently owe the IRS will receive the money. YMMV because who knows what the final solution will be.

Also, CNN stated that the fast rollout means start shipping checks around June 1.

I hope you are right. From this article it looks like no one knows for sure

Democratic congressional leaders agree that tax relief should be in the package, but are working on a broader measure. Lawmakers are discussing a $500 rebate for individuals, said aides to lawmakers involved in the talks, with details for couples and people with children still being negotiated. The rebates would likely be limited to individuals with incomes of $85,000 or less and couples with incomes of $110,000 or less, the aides said, speaking on condition of anonymity because no final decisions had been made.

That is the stupidest thing ever. So someone that makes $85,000.00 gets it but someone who happen to make $85,000.01 gets nothing?

LMAO

Fucking awesome.

The government borrows the money from China to give us tax relief and then we all go buy shit made in China and they get the money back, plus the repayment, PLUS the interest.

Boggles the mind.

Most all of the governments money is our money. =p

minus the loans they took on.

With $1,600, I'd just throw it on a credit card and call it a day.

And thus add liquidity to the credit market which seems to be in such dire need of it at this time. Thus the mortgage market would miraculously recover, leading to the miraculous recovery of the housing market.

You won't need heating oil by the time you get this unless you're buying it for next year. The target date for this speedy rebate is June 1 for the first checks according to Yahoo link.

Go on another cruise, or maybe a roadtrip. I have a week of vacation and am just about $600 short of what it would cost.

Well, I just bought a house and I'm planning on spending $30k to renovate it... so I guess my answer would be that. Is this going to be one of those things that I have to pay back next year?

I don't think that is going to happen. It would cause an uproar from hell. To give it to the 40 million working people who pay ZERO or actually get more than they paid back and then not to people over a certain limit, especially ones that are as low as has been mentioned, would be suicide. Besides, I still haven't seen much of this being mentioned other than this thread. From everything I've read, they're looking at elimating the 10% tax bracket for one year, which would take care of everyone paying taxes and then extend the same credit to those that work but actually don't pay.
