Interesting that everyone's "jaw dropping" experience has to do with ONLY graphics... every single post...

The OP said the LAST time it happened... which generally would mean it happened recently and recent games are usually graphically impressive. The last time I was impressed by something non-visual was probably Portal 1 during a puzzle when you had to launch multiple portals while still flying through the air.

Though I have had some particularly sweet moments in FarCry 3 recently involving luring tigers into enemy camps and watching them go nuts. :hmm:

I remember the first time a game made my jaw drop. It was when I was about 14 years old and I first watched Gorion throwing magic missiles at half orcs in Baldur's Gate 1. I couldn't get over how stunning it was.

Most recent was probably Skyrim. Nothing in particular and everything in general about it.

I think Oblivion was the last game to make me just stare at the beautiful backgrounds (due to the far rendering distances) with complete awe. Crysis 1 also wowed me, but it was a smaller step from Oblivion to Crysis as it was from the previous game to Oblivion. The Witcher 2 also wowed me with many of it's visuals, but I don't remember ever going and looking at the scenery just to look at it like I did with Oblivion.

Er, there's been a few people saying Witcher 1 and 2. They were both visually good, Witcher 2 is still probably in the top 3 best looking games ever made, but its story and character interactions were so far above the other 'RPGs' that came out around the same time.

Torment had some amazing content, but I don't think my jaw dropped. Teared up though.

There were also some parts in the Mass Effect Trilogy that made me tear up too.

Only one game is on my list purely for graphics, which should be obvious.

Homeworld has epic storytelling and presentation.

Cryostasis is amazing in several ways (the water and ice physics simulations) and is an original concept; It's also amazing how poorly optimized it was.

FarCry3 doesn't leave first-person for ANYTHING. It has really good visuals, great presentation and imo, good voice acting.

Fallout3/NV just sucked me in for hours. I'm a sucker for anything post-apocalyptic, and the world and detail blew me away.

Amazing game play doesn't make my jaw drop, it just makes me smile and enjoy the game. Crysis 1 graphics were so good I had to pause and just admire how far we've come.

Planet side 2, but for its scope not its graphics.

I was fighting for a biolabd with my squad and I could see about 40 aircraft in the sky fighting, anti air fire, tanks down below and lots of infantry with so much gunfire it was overwhelming. An incredible scene of mass combat I have never seen before.

The long burn awe I have is Arma 2. Never ceases to amaze me how great this game is in its scope and flexibility.

KOTOR was the last game that was shockingly good and really blew me away. If that's the question being asked. The story twist blew me away because I didn't see it coming at all.

I hear you. I was playing SWTOR for the past month, with all the annoying gameplay flaws and usual MMO stupidity...The last thing on my mind would be the graphics even though its mediocre at best.

Back on the graphics topic, Crysis 1 is the best, I won't argue it looks absolutely stunning, but it feels really tiring after playing it a while as if like my brain is being fed too much visual information, while stuff like TF2 doesn't because it doesn't pretend or aspire to be a reality visual simulator.

dragon age origin; the graphics were dated even when it came out but there were some very wow moments and the cut scenese were (imho) well placed to move the story (the combat sucked). Witcher 2 was good but didn't quite have wow moments; skyrim landscape was great but the game it self didn't wow me; though some of the individual quests had some very good moments (much better than oblivion); but the main quest/story kind of was al et down; farcry (though today it is dated) was the last fps that was like oh wow I can go anywhere and do anything. You can replay maps and take like 15 or 30 different paths from start point to objective. Its not perfect but it was a lot of fun.

so summary
dragon age origin (story/presentation/narrative but combat and graphics were a bit downer)
witcher 2 (graphics, story)
skyrim (graphics)
farcry (game mechanics, graphics when it came out - bit dated now)
-
oh yea not mentioned above but metro2033 had fantastic atmosphere.

Agreed. Gameplay makes me happy. Fantastic art direction and/or graphic quality make my jaw drop.

Mirror's Edge and STALKER made my jaw drop because of the amazing artistic direction, even though the graphic quality was not particularly high on either.

Crysis made my jaw drop because the environment was so dynamic. The trees and grass all waving in the wind, the shadows dancing on the ground. It was the first game that gave me the impression that I was really in a natural setting.

Even the sound design made it more immersive....like how they didn't repeat the same foot sounds for every step like most FPS games before it. When you're running on sand, you can actually hear the way some of your steps twist and turn a little sideways.

Stalker really impressed me with the realistic AI, where the world characters would interact and the factions would advance without your interaction. I had never seen that in a game before, and I haven't seen it in a game since. It was the best part of that game.

Deadlight most recently. Other than that, Oblivion blew me away when leaving the opening dungeon for the first time and realizing I needed a graphic card upgrade. Which was 6 years ago. Though nothing has ever came close to Shadow of the Colossus in wowing me, yeah I know it's a PS2 game.

Metro 2033. For a linear game, it was quite the experience.
COD 2. Again linear, but a lot of fun with suprises, like killing innocent civilians then taking a bullet yourself and on to the next guy in a new location. I love that kind of variety

Graphics is a huge part of the immersion. The more immersed you are in a game, the more jaw dropping it would be.
Gameplay rarely changes between genre's. Nothing jaw dropping about pressing WASD and pew...pew..pew.
