When I played outside, I wasn't allowed out of my mom's site. So for example, if I wanted to ride my bike, my mom would sit outside and watch me. I had to stay in her field of vision (a range of about 3 houses).

My dad was much more fun and let me roam wherever I wanted, but if my mom found out he would get yelled at.

I used to live in a heavily forested area. My best times as a kid were wandering around that forest.

Sucked to be you, I was also kept on a pretty long leash. I could more or less do whatever I wanted whenever I wanted as long as my folks knew where I was going. That said, I never did much that was truly crazy or idiotic, so it's not like they were really opening themselves up to a ton of risk.

Yeah, I really don't understand this one. I see kids riding their bikes and doing shit outside all the time. I live in a middle upper class neighborhood in Southern California with million dollar homes, so it's not like these families can't afford an Xbox. Instead, I see kids riding on bikes and playing baseball in the street.

Shit, I saw a bunch of 12 year olds playing street hockey just last week. Kids love playing outside.

Jeans might not cost $8, but that's just inflation. Remember, people make more now (on average) than they did back then. It evens out. In any case, you can get jeans for like $20. That's not so bad.

Walking or riding a bike to and from school, or having to ride the bus. With all the paranoia about kids getting abducted, molested, etc, etc parents drive their kids everywhere. I remember riding my bike EVERYWHERE when I was a kid, easily 20 miles in a day sometimes in the summer. Heck there was one time I biked almost completely across the county just to make a bootycall on my girlfriend ... ah, memories

Not that I really knew this growing up but in retrospect...

We were able to run wild throughout the neighborhood/nearyby neighborhoods without a care in the world. No one worried about kids being picked up off the street, etc. About the worst thing my parents worried about was if one of us showed back up at the house with some kind of injury from whatever kind of madness we were getting into that day.

Yeah, I was pointing out the irrational fears most parents have of their kids these days. They're scared to leave their child alone.
Remember that hoopla over that mom who sent her 9 year old alone on the subway in NYC? I think no one would've cared if this happened 10 years ago.
Also, kids are just less active these days with tv/internet/video games/cellphones (mostly the internet). I think we can all agree that that's true.
A 5 year old is not old enough to be exposed to all that but wait until she's 12, 13, 14.
