Playing outside. So many bikerides, scratched knees, discoveries ect when I lived in a small town as a kid, now even small town kids are anti-social :(

Also being able to walk 6 blocks to the store as a kid with a few dollars to spend hours picking out penny candies, fun times.

are we going to be living in bubbles or on mars ro something? how can kids not be able to play outside?

When I played outside, I wasn't allowed out of my mom's site. So for example, if I wanted to ride my bike, my mom would sit outside and watch me. I had to stay in her field of vision (a range of about 3 houses).

My dad was much more fun and let me roam wherever I wanted, but if my mom found out he would get yelled at.

I used to live in a heavily forested area. My best times as a kid were wandering around that forest.

Sucked to be you, I was also kept on a pretty long leash. I could more or less do whatever I wanted whenever I wanted as long as my folks knew where I was going. That said, I never did much that was truly crazy or idiotic, so it's not like they were really opening themselves up to a ton of risk.

Yeah, I really don't understand this one. I see kids riding their bikes and doing shit outside all the time. I live in a middle upper class neighborhood in Southern California with million dollar homes, so it's not like these families can't afford an Xbox. Instead, I see kids riding on bikes and playing baseball in the street.

Shit, I saw a bunch of 12 year olds playing street hockey just last week. Kids love playing outside.

Going to places like Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Sequoias, etc., without crowds, traffic, or fees. Knowing that the absolute worst thing the cops were going to do to you if they
caught you drinking, was make you pour it out, or perhaps tell your folks. There were places like, *lovers lane* that didn't have a gate that said closed at sundown. Big name band concerts with open seating for less than 10 dollars, AND the doobies just kept getting passed down the aisle all night. Finding free parking close to where you wanted to go. Sex wouldn't kill you, and it was plentiful. When a pair of jeans cost less than 8 dollars. You could afford taking a girl out for dinner, AND a movie.
When you did not truly think, that life as you know it,---- is about to end.

You sound like a damned dirty hippie!

Jeans might not cost $8, but that's just inflation. Remember, people make more now (on average) than they did back then. It evens out. In any case, you can get jeans for like $20. That's not so bad.

Walking or riding a bike to and from school, or having to ride the bus. With all the paranoia about kids getting abducted, molested, etc, etc parents drive their kids everywhere. I remember riding my bike EVERYWHERE when I was a kid, easily 20 miles in a day sometimes in the summer. Heck there was one time I biked almost completely across the county just to make a bootycall on my girlfriend ... ah, memories :)

But every time someone caught a ball, you got another chance to pick youself up and prove you were worth the air you were breathing.

and now they go and ban it everywhere because it's mean. disgusting.

Oh AMEN! Dodgeball in school was awesome even if I wasn't one of the really good ones at it. It was still a fun time...

"Lesson Learned"

Getting busted by the cops / school officials / neighbors and them extracting a little justice right there and nothing going on your record.

Most of the stuff you guys listed, future generations can experience. They can watch cartoons and such on the internet. Kids can always buy an older system and play it. The one about smoking in bars is a good one though. No one will ever be able to experience that again.

You can still smoke in bars. Just not in your state/county/whatever.

Not that I really knew this growing up but in retrospect...

We were able to run wild throughout the neighborhood/nearyby neighborhoods without a care in the world. No one worried about kids being picked up off the street, etc. About the worst thing my parents worried about was if one of us showed back up at the house with some kind of injury from whatever kind of madness we were getting into that day.

Yeah, I was pointing out the irrational fears most parents have of their kids these days. They're scared to leave their child alone.
Remember that hoopla over that mom who sent her 9 year old alone on the subway in NYC? I think no one would've cared if this happened 10 years ago.
Also, kids are just less active these days with tv/internet/video games/cellphones (mostly the internet). I think we can all agree that that's true.
A 5 year old is not old enough to be exposed to all that but wait until she's 12, 13, 14.
It's gonna be like that T-mobile commerical.."UM IDK MY BFF JILL?"

This.

I would be outside playing sports, riding my bike, or whatever as early as 7AM with my friends. Come home for lunch, and go right back at it until dark. Good times.
