That was the best thing about your childhood?

I believe him. I would agree, if he was talking about the violence.

2nd that one (though only applies to Western places, as most of Asia and Africa you can still smoke inside), plus being able to smoke on a plane.

- hanging out/playing in the park across the house with neighborhood kids... (sometimes till 10-11pm during summer vacations)
- Riding bikes to a different neighborhood (some few miles away) or just cruising on the roads for hours.
- walking to local video rental shop few blocks away and renting cartoons/movies or buying cheap candy
- coming home with heavily scratched knees/elbows (often blooded) and just applying some anti-bacterial cream or band-aids
^all this in the 80s-90s

now, my nephews/niece are usually indoors only playing computer games/PS3/etc or they just play outside infront of their house. They are not allowed to go any farther than 1 block from their home without an adult.

Hell yes. Random exploring kicked ass. Blowing stuff up. Everything seems so controlled now.

Riding a bike(skateboard, scooter, etc) without 80lbs of protective equipment on.
Playing on a swingset that did not cover every chain, bolt, screw, bar, etc with padding. (not long before they are deemed inherently dangerous and banned outright).
Not living in fear.

Because they aren?t allowed to by parents out of an irrational fear of them being abducted or getting hurt

That and all the pedophiles hanging out at the parks.

The ability to explore the world without constant rules/restrictions/dangers/supervision etc. We would ride our bikes all over the place and find stuff to do. We'd get together on an empty field and play ball -- no adults, no umpires etc etc, just fun. That stuff is long gone, kids today can only participate in activities with adult supervision, ruining all the fun.

Saturday mornings just aren't the same. :(

I guess kids can still do the same things that we did (playing outside, etc), just the impetus for the most part is not there.

My neighbor friends and I used to run around "shooting" each other and playing war. I found some of my old toys the one summer I was home and good christ were they realistic. These days I'd be arrested for being a terrorist or something.
