What type of typist are you?

Unlike secretaries, data entry people or others most computer enthusiasts and even programmers learned to use a computer themselves which includes typing. This being the case most either did not take typing lessons or if they did they already had some form of typing method well enough cemented in their brains that when they did take them it didn't change the way they typed. I learned to type just with fiddling with computers. I started like most just with single finger hunt and peck and slowly graduated to full speed typing with both hands. However I never used formal typing skills and still look at the keyboard for most of my typing. I can look away for about a couple of seconds but more than that can I make lots of mistakes. I'm fairly fast at it though. What method do you use?

i type with both hands and don't hafta look at the keyboard at all. I was forced to take computer classes in elementary school where i learned how to type

I tried that Mavis Beacon typing course for awhile, hated it, and just forgot about it. I then started playing online games and my need to be able to communicate (read: scream at) outweighed my laziness and I eventually formed the ability to type without even looking at a keyboard at all. In fact I typed this sentence right now without even looking at the keyboard or the screen. 😛

You're exactly right..

I wouldn't call my typing hunt and peck, I don't have to look to type at all...

I use all my fingers on my left hand, and only one finger on my right hand. I guess it looks really funny to others, because my right hand looks like it's having a seizure as it flies around the keyboard, lol.

I can type over 100WPM with 99% accuracy, though.

Home row typer. But my right hand has the tendency to move around instead of reaching with the pinky or the ring finger. My left hand although utilizes all of the fingers, but my right only uses everything else but the pinky.

I am messy but i use homerow, I dont look. If i make mistakes i rarely correct myself in a messenger

i took typing in high school, on "typewriters" (youngin's can look that up on google)
and my job is computer stuff, so i type good

Not really any of these. I am for the most part a formal typer, but I don't always hit the keys with the "right fingers". Almost a quick hunt and peck mixed in with formal, but rarely have to look at the keyboard.

i dont need to look at the keyboard...and im not qwerty, but im not my own method either.

its weird...but it works and i type damn fast imo (over 100wpm).

Same for me, except I top out at around 85-90 WPM.

I am so similar except slightly over 100wpm.

Used to run about 70wpm but have slowed down over the years. At one point, my wife could do over 100wpm. Both hands on the keyboard and don't have to look (took one year of typing in highschool and have to say that it has been the most useful class that I have ever taken in my entire life). The problem that I have is that as you get older, my brain can't keep up with my fingers! 😛

High speed two finger typist. I took a typing class in high school long enough to learn the keyboard. Finger memory is gone for home row typing.

I can type without looking at the keys except with certain laptops, which change the keys around a bit like Toshiba.

Seriously, anyone who has used a computer for any length of time knows where the keys are by rote. If you're still hunting and pecking, looking at your keyboard, it's because you have formed that habit. Now try and form the habit of NOT looking and train self on this. 🙂

Home row typist. I basically learned to type when I was about 8. My mom bought one of those "Mavis Beacon" programs and I tried it out a bit. Got bored (and frustrated), stopped for a while, and took it up again later. Eventually I kicked the shit out of that damn race car 😛

I don't know how fast I type, but as long as I can type without looking and at a decent speed, its good enough.
