What type of typist are you?

I've taken typing classes, both in high school 40 years ago, and in college last year. My typing speed varies by the day, averaging over 40 wpm with less than 2 errors, but if I push it, I can type 70+ with no or one error for a minute or two.

I've broken or badly jammed every finger in both hands at least once, so I physically can't make the little fingers hit the keys they're supposed to. That affects both speed and accuracy.

best classes I ever took in high school were typing 1 and 2. Although back then you had to be careful that you didn't type too fast or the hammers would lock. Once the idea of a 10 character buffer came about it was a god send.

Eh.. I dont use the formal home row method, but I can type very fast without looking at the keyboard. I guess ive just got everything memorized... I only ever use my index finger, middle finger, and thumbs from each hand when i type.

Took typing lessons in school on a typewriter a long time ago and didn't see the point at all at the time. But now I'm glad. For what ever reason I have a couple bad habits. Like I only shift with the left hand and I hit the y key with my left index finger. Not real fast, but I don't have to look at the keyboard.

Same with me. I can type fast with 2-4 fingers, but am very slow with home form or whatever it's called. What happens when you learn to type "properly" after years of self-learning.

I do the look down quick and type. But I have anywhere from >90% accuracy at 110ish WPM.

Home row absolutely, and I don't look at the keyboard...about 85WPM with about 97% accuracy. I'm pretty quick entering numbers on the number pad too.

High school typing classes + Mario Teaches Typing + summer job transcribing dictation at a law firm = decent skills.

The Home/End/Delete keys still throw me sometimes...why does every keyboard have a slightly different setup for those?

Eh. I use all of my fingers, type fast and incorrectly (never took a keyboarding class - I had to learn how to type fast in order to keep up with friends on instant messenger), and never look at the keyboard.

I was typing a reply to say that i use the formal home row method, but then realised half way through that I only use 7 fingers, and i use my right hand to hit some buttons on the left side of the keyboard, and vice versa. and I make a lot of mistakes.

So really, it's nothing like the home row method.

well it depends on what langauge. in english, i type blind with both hands. in hebrew, i need to look at the keyboard and find the keys.

My mother was a legal secretary. She could type over 100 words per minute with zero mistakes (She use to type all of our school reports ) . We had an old-style typewriter that she would regularly jam. But, when she got going, it sounded like music.

I wish I could type like that.

Home Row method, learned in one semester on a manual typewriter back when I was in seventh grade. It was the single most valuable class I've ever taken in school.

Touch typing ftw. I never look at the keyboard, even for function keys, numbers, page down/up keys, etc. I can't imagine having to search around for what I was wanting to do.

I took a few weeks of a typing class a looong time ago. I quickly hit over 100wpm, and when I was proficient I topped out at 162wpm. My average is now around 120-140wpm or so when typing casually.

I'm not a homerow typer... after years of gaming, my left hand kind of instinctually rests on the wasd keys.

but I utilize all of my fingers when I'm typing and never have to look at the keyboard. I forget how many wmp I can type -- it's been awhile since it was measured, back when I was doing temp/secretarial work -- but I used to take dictation all the time back when I was an assistant (the guy I worked for was old and sucked with computers).

I haven't taken a typing test in a long, long time, but I taught myself to type long before I took the typing class that I was required to take in school -- 8th grade. I can type reasonably fast -- not as fast as many of you here can, but faster than pretty much everyone I know IRL. Never have to look at the keyboard, with the exception of pause, scroll, and sysrq keys. It's not the traditional touch typing pattern... it's something screwy.
