Premium here, I hop over the border to South Carolina and get gas 10-15 cents cheaper. I cheaped out last week and put regular in it while I was running around town.
This was the first time I've put regular gas in it, afraid it would spark-knock but hasn't so far.

For those flaming the OP, Maximas usually require premium.

I used ole 87 octane when the difference was only 2 cents

BTW, prices went down 4 cents here this weekend (after I filled up, bastards)
$2.12 for 89, $2.18 for reg 87, $2.26 for 93

There's no proof that using a cell phone while pumping gas can cause a fire. However, letting go of the pump handle and getting back in the car can cause static to build up and when you touch the pump handle again, which is grounded, it's possible that a spark could ignite the fumes. But I haven't see any evidence that a cell phone can cause a fire... in fact, it sounds a bit rediculous to me.

But yeah, using anything higher than is recommended is throwing money away. Higher octanes do nothing to get you better gas mileage or anything else. They actually burn hotter and can damage the engine if it's made to use standard unleaded gas.

It's more so that you aren't distracted, I think - just like when driving, it's a bad idea to be distracted when you are in the presence of something highly flammable.

I'm just relaying instructions I see at the pumps.

Not all pump cutoffs work as well. Get some yakal on a phone not paying attention and you have a recipe for disaster. They also recommend staying OUTSIDE of your vehicle while pumping and if you must go inside your car touch a grounded object BEFORE touching the nozzle. I remember a tape where a girl got flashed because of this. COMMON SENSE PEOPLE!

I guess there is a remote possibility the phone could malfunction and ignite. Li Ion sources are notorious for misbehaving especially since manufacturers like to cut corners in charging design. The Logitech MX1000 comes to mind.

It was, but I suppose that if you poured gas on one (did they do that?), maybe it could start. Probably not though, but if you had one of those cellphone explosions _at the same time_ as somehow getting swamped in gas bad things could happen.
