You have a Civic...

And it's not the rpm that makes an engine require "the extra octane", it's the compression/boost.

What car do you drive?

A 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage DE.

WTF? Maybe if I was driving a 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo MR, then I'd be putting some nice stuff in there. Otherwise, it's 87 regular for my car, IF it's lucky.

Gas?

Well if your car runs on GAS then there is only one kind you can use.

Now if you're talkking about GASOLINE, that's another story.

RTFM then go to the filling station and purchase the recommended stuff. TURN OFF YOUR CELLPHONE and EXTINGUISH ANY LIGHTED TOBACCO PRODUCTS on your person before activating fuel pumps.

Wasn't the cell phone thing tested (and exposed as false) on Mythbusters?
It was, but I suppose that if you poured gas on one (did they do that?), maybe it could start. Probably not though, but if you had one of those cellphone explosions _at the same time_ as somehow getting swamped in gas bad things could happen.

They tried a lot of things to get a cell phone in conjunction with gasoline vapors to start an explosion with negative results and eventually gave up.

They were, however, able to get an explosion using gasoline vapors and a huge charge of static electricity produced by some device whose name escapes me at the moment.

You will get better MPG if you use lower octane fuel, ya'll know that right? So for car that only need 87, stick to 87!
Is that true? The owners manual says that I can put anything from 87- 93. But I get the best gas mileage at 89 - pretty significant mileage difference...am I just imagining this???

It's not always wise to run what your car manual says. My car says it requires 87, but it's an old and beat up Chevy and I get pinging if I run 87, so I use mid-grade and it runs fine.

I use premium, because my fart cannon requires it.

I use unleaded most of the time and occassionally use mid to premium to clean my engine. Two door roadster.

I seem to remember HEARING that some cars can detect the octane level of your fuel and adjust your timing accordingly. Not too sure about this, but I suppose it makes sense.

1999 Honda Civic Si
Compression Ratio - 10.2:1
Required fuel octane - 91

How about a nice tall frosty mug of SHUT THE H@LL UP?

Take your own advice.

I use premium gas because that is what is required.

BTW, premium does not keep your engine "clean". It could keep it from knocking.

no, it doesn't keep your engine clean. "87" isn't dirty, they don't put chunks of dirt in "87"

you are wasting your money

Always 91+, usually 93. The dealer actually had it filled with 87 when I bought it. Ugh.. WTF!

And using 91 gas in that vehicle has nothing to do with it being "high revving" like was claimed.

Those that say that HAVE to use premium, check your owners manual or online. A lot of high performance cars that recommend premium can also run on mid-grade just as well. You will lose some HP but not enough to notice unless you are at the track.

My parents Z28 calls for premium but I put mid in a couple times and they did not notice and run that all the time now.

Not all cars, especially older ones, can retard the timing or adjust as well. But if it was made in the last 5-10 years you can probable run Mid-grade just fine, Especially if it calls for 91octane, not 93.

Where's the option for Ultra 94? Thats all I put in my car. Only Sunoco carries it as far as I know.

You do notice the reduced power. My car is noticeably slower with the reduced timing, and pinged when it had 87 in it.
