Figured I'd bump this again for those who care about it. This past Saturday I attended a 4-hour ground fighting seminar. It was probably not the smartest idea after being away from class for about 6 weeks due to dental work and associated infection and also because I have a bad knee.
It was a fantastic class, I learned a lot and hopefully will retain some of it, but I had to "tap out" about 20 minutes before the end of class. We were practicing a technique from our knees, and my knee on which I've had surgery couldn't deal with it. When I felt the swelling start to enter the joint I had to call it quits for my own health.
But I went to class Sunday morning and again tonight.
One of the really cool things about this instructor and this organization is the retraining and updating that they do. While I was away, my instructor traveled for an instructor seminar of some sort and learned some updates to techniques. So some specific techniques that he had been teaching just 4-6 months ago have already been modified, simplified and improved for greater utility in multiple situations. I think that's really cool.
I'm always a bit nervous going to class, thinking, "oh man, what is he going to have us doing today?" Today was one of those days where I really felt uneasy when he told us we were going to practice rolls. I'm not a terribly coordinated person, nor do I have a history of being terribly athletic or flexible. However, with the way he explained it, I felt like I was doing really well and he verified that a couple times as I was practicing the technique.
I'm having a great time and while I'd like to use my experience to recommend Krav Maga to everyone who is interested in self defense training, I have a feeling a large part of the enjoyment I'm getting out of it is a result of the instructor, Ron, and the way he runs the class. So awesome. Glad I started, continue to go, and went back after being out with health issues for almost a couple months!
