To those of you saying "how mean" or similar comments: How else would you send a message to the Iraqis to stop looting without killing anyone?

Shoot one in the head.

Yeah, that would really send a useful message about the kinds of civil rights they can expect under an enlightened American-led regime.

This is stupid and criminal behavior by these tankers. They are denying these "looters" the very rights they are ostensibly in Iraq to protect. I think it's a shame they were put in a position to make a judgment call on how to handle the situation, but they handled it very, very badly IMO. This is exactly the kind of behavior that makes other nations so suspicious of Americans, and furthers the impression we are arrogant know-it-alls.

I think it's silly to speculate that they fired on the car to "disable" it - I don't think 30 9mm bullets into a windshield would disable a Model T. That was strictly done for fun as far as I can see, and they sure looked like they were having a good time.

I think this is what the Army was trying to avoid.

Which is why we're training a new Iraqi military force and a new Iraqi Police force complete with its own leaders and power. Maybe the news doesn't focus to much on the training, but its happening way more then people know about. Its becomming Iraq's responsibility to control Iraq.

Yes heard! He was a taxi driver.. sucks to be him :/

Shoulda thought about that before stealing wood. If you were his taxi competitor, you would certainly think twice about looting with your vehicle after seeing or hearing about that wouldn't you? So, it does get the job done cheaply and quickly.
So it's ok to have complete lack of respect for others cultures?

These army men were the judge, jury and executioner of people they don't even know. Go democracy!
We went in and magically "liberated" them, now they must follow the American ideal?
Superb.
I'm sure a few more starbucks or mabey a walmart or two would help them out.

I find it funny how the one army guy was telling the man how that child should be in school.
Yea, I'm sure you mad it far through school and just couldn't wait to be a grunt in the field.

As it should be. That all makes perfect sense to me. I just don't think those soldiers were doing anyone, including the US, any favors with that particular brand of "justice." The irony of our invasion and occupation of Iraq is that, if we leave them completely to their own devices, they will likely create an Islam-based dictatorship, just like every other country in that part of the world. Ah well . . .

Man, that's just typical PBS anti-American liberal propagandist bullsh*t. "Taxi was his livelihood" whaa whaa whaa bitch bitch whine--if he's such an enterprising individual he can make a rickshaw from whatever's left over of that wood.

Are you suggesting he steal the wood? Umm, didn't that get him in to trouble in the first place?

My response would be that if that car was his livelihood, he should have thought twice before looting.

I do, however, dislike the rather cavalier attitude displayed in the administering of the punishment. It will breed hatred and resentment towards the USA in general. I prefer that rule of law be followed, where the general population understood what the consequences of their actions were to be if caught.

That said, I understand that we are certainly not getting the whole story from a 1-minute propaganda piece, so no serious judgements should be derived from it and it alone.

Ok Sampson, so maybe he should have his hands and feet cut off? Then it would be a more cultural punishment. At least he'd still have his taxi.

I don't think that's the point, at least not to me. I can't see why we should be happy they imposed one draconian punishment without any due process, as opposed to another draconian punishment. Our invasion of Iraq was substantially based on the idea that we were liberating them from a brutal regime, but to me that video reflects nothing better than the imposition of a different set of unfair rules. How would you feel if your car was destroyed because a cop thought you stole $3 worth of scrap wood, particularly if your annual income was something like $1,000?

Anyone have that video where the American Soldiers are cheering after killing an Iraqi Civilian?

Um, in certain states in the US, it is legal (and practiced) to permanently impound the vehicle of someone who witnesses a drug sale and does not report it. I don't see how this is really any different/worse.

WTF....

I mean seriously... that's just uncalled for. They may have been stealing, but you can't just go and destroy their belongings like that for punishment.....

Can you imagine how frustrating it would be to be poor, living in a 3rd world country that is occupied... and have your only car thoughtlessly destroyed? Further, your only way to make money(taxi driver)?

Someone needs to give them a new car.

Someone needs to hit you upside the head with a brick.

You need to go to an anger management therapy course. Without any REAL hard facts, and assumptions really don't help a situation. They tend to make it worse.
