all depends on a more specific question... is it closest star OTHER than the sun? Or is it a trick question and we are supposed to say none of the above because it is the sun? If its other than the sun, than the answer is Proxima Centauri.

That's just French for "sun". Latin is the "formal" name, sort of like Terra for earth.

The full name might be "sol solis", if Google isn't leading me wrong.

"solis" is the genitive. "sol, solis" a list of principal forms, like "do, did, done".

Stupid question. I assumed you meant other than the sun, because I assumed that no one would ask such a stupid question.
