The closest "known" star to earth is the Sun.
The closest "known" star to earth other than sun is Proxima Centauri.
The closest "known" star system to earth is Alpha Centauri.

There is no star named "Alpha Centauri". Alpha Centauri is a star system containing 3 "known" stars: Proxima Centauri, Alpha Centauri A, Alpha Centauri B.

EDIT: added the word "known". b/c in Astronomy, more stars and planets are being discovered everyday. So our answers can change tomorrow (or maybe never )

Seriously, why do people feel compelled to regurgitate the same damn answer in the thread? It's almost certain that at least half of those that answered Googled for it anyway.
