Paid $200 for my 8x20 Smart & Friendly SCSI CDR drive back in Nov '99. Ah well, at least it came with a SCSI card I'm still using. Probably won't upgrade till a true recordable DVD (and affordable!) standard comes out.

I've got a USB external QPS 4x2x6, which works great (the drive itself is manufactured by Mitsumi) even though it's now almost 4 years old. I had a Mac at the time, and needed cross-platform interop capability. This thing's even got the funky iMac clear/blue plastic stylings...

My current drive isn't even on your list! I've got a 4x2x24 currently, but I just ordered a 32x Cendyne for $70 after coupon and rebate.

Sweet.

I wonder how many corners they cut. I bet they have a group of engineers hired to cut cost with drop in quality without getting noticed, but by the most educated consumers.
