The father appears uninvolved with life. The term "overqualified" is another way of saying too proud and lazy.
The situation with the brother can be controlled by anyone willing to take the initiative to do so, including the sister if the parents are not going to do it. I would rather fix my brother than watch him run his life into the gutter. That is what family love is about; confronting and fixing, not idly watching. The way to handle him is to coordinate a family meeting with everyone at the table. Of course, food and desert need to be available to keep everyone's interest. Additionally, the sister and parents need to discuss the issues prior to the meeting with the brother and have a plan to direct him. Do not verbally attack or gang up on the brother. Instead, the family needs to tell him of their concern for him in a rational, calm, adult manner with no yelling and have a plan for him to follow to bring his life back in line. If the brother ignores the family advice, then it is time to kick him out of the house until he learns better.
Does the mom cook? I doubt it. Families without a mom preparing the meals for everyone to come together typically end up falling apart.
Useless father, useless mother, useless brother. I wonder about the sister.
I wish good luck to all involved.
Edit:
To answer the original question of what should have been done with the brother forcing his way into her room, it would have been good not to reply in an argumentative fashion. There is no need for yelling. Calmly let him know that he is not wanted in her room and it is time for him to leave. It is not easy to do this but irrational people do not know how to respond to rational opposition. Therefore, it is best not to let the other's mood affect your own.
