They ain't doing squat with that money they get from taxes. BTW, Hector... if you claim correctly on that form when you first got hired, you wouldn't be hit so hard all at once. 😉
 
The divisions are much to small. Many familys make over 100K and are flat broke and unhappy.

In california an average home is 500K in a good area so figure a lot of that 100K is chewed up mortgage and taxes and income taxes.

Good income in Ca is 150K. Usually two making around 75K.

As moonie said I would be happier living on investments and fishing for barracuda all day.

Sorry, I couldn't think of a better way to do it. I've never really lived anywhere with an insane cost of living .. at least I'm pretty sure Oklahoma, Kansas, Las Vegas or Utah wouldn't qualify.

because i've lived here all my life and i don't want to leave anytime soon. i like it too much and leaving would probably devastate me, unless i'm moving somewhere with a very assured financial future/career.

cost of living has skyrocketed in the last what, ten years?

that amount is to live comfortable. to just live you can do so with a lot less. no suburbs, good schools, nice cars, etc.
 
this implies that money = happiness and that's not always the case. in many places you can comfortably live in the situation you posted on a salary of under $60k. in others it would take more. but honestly i don't see the need in having +100k to live comfortably; to live wealthy, yes it would be nice.
 
My dad makes around 45k which is plenty for us. We live in a small town (4500 people) in Illinois.

I made 12k last year working while going to school.

I know money doesn't = happiness. That's why I clarified what was meant by "happy" in my original post. I think there are so many votes for > $100k because a lot of people do believe that though. Or perhaps no one is reading my original post before voting .. I doubt that many people live in areas like NYC or Cali. Oh well.

every single one of them has a masters or a bachelors... working towards a masters... all of em from respectable colleges...


it means i have a hell of a legacy to fulfill... gotta finish college 😛

i have a house, 2 cars, 3 kids and i'm living in NJ. We figured out monthly expenses exceeded 7K per month, so ya, put me in the >100k club.

I could live fine w/ 40k-60k. I wouldn't have a whole lot, but definitely would be somehwhat comfortable. And abou what wingznut said, I totally agree. While I am young, I still see the need to enjoy what you do, since you spend 8 hrs, 5 days a week, at least 48wks a year of your life doing it. That is an awful lot of time to spend and not enoy what you're doing.

so instead I would have paid the city over the course of a year and in effect have given them a interest free loan for 12 months? Some how that doesn't seem any better to me.
