I continually hit mine with a small hammer until I hear a crack/ snap, or until the screen goes black.

Unless it's one of my Macs, in which case I put it to sleep.

I let the monitor go into standby, but the PC stays on 24/7. Its better for the system.

It gets shut down and unplugged if I'm out of town for a weekend or on vacation or some such.

Hibernate is easy - it's writing RAM to a file (hiberfil.sys) to the HDD.
Standby/sleep is another story. So many motherboard BIOS' issues with that. Both my ASUS P6T7 and REXIII boards do sleep fairly well although about one in ten times I lose USB on wake.

If you don't have a RAID with a "flight checklist" BIOS, it's easier to just shutdown. :D

I find that with the Areca hosts even sleep mode recovery is slow because POST is still running in the background, the display is OFF so the wake time while faster than booting; is still lengthy.

I've been looking for an explanation for why my system takes soo long to boot out of sleep mode. Finally got my answer! Ironic that my 4 year old laptop can boot from sleep mode faster than my core i5 system I built in January. :\

Regardless of how long sleep mode takes I usually use it on the weekdays, and shut down whenever I leave for the night. By that time it usually wants to install some updates anyway.

My main PC stays on all the time as I use it to serve media to the rest of the house. I would just have a server in a closet but my drives are SATA and I don't have another SATA board that I could use for a server.

My bedroom HTPC also stays on all the time too. We watch streamed content on there and whenever I'm on that floor it's the PC I hop on to look stuff up. I could probably put it to sleep or something but I like being able to just shake the mouse and go.

My other 2 HTPC's get booted up and shut down when not in use. One of them is watercooled so I don't want it running all the time and the other only gets used a couple times a week.

Just close the monitor and walk away. I only shut off the monitor since often the idle timer doesn't work in Win7.
I use remote desktop all the time so it's useful that my comp is up, plus I usually have a dozen plus things open so it's a PITA to start over.

HTPC: Sleep. Only gets restarted if it's acting sluggish.

Desktop: If I'm going out for the day or going to bed: shut-down. If I'm hanging around the apartment, just sleep.

My desktop stays running 24/7, but I close my laptop and it does STR. It hibernates if the battery gets too low while suspended.

Just screensaver, mine is pretty much running 24/7 unless I'm leaving town for a few days.

I turn off my monitors but my computer stays on.

I planted a tree once, so the environment is ok.

None of the above. My monitor goes to sleep after 10 minutes. That's it. My system acts as the house media and print server. So it stays on 24/7

During the day, I just turn off the monitor and walk away...at night, shut down.

really? My antivirus and antispyware run at night. I also like to seed torrents to help others (nothing illegal, mostly android ROMs).

Most of computing time is spent on my laptop. Generally, I have it go to sleep, but if I'm not going to be using it for a while, I'll let it hibernate as sleep mode still draws battery power if it's not plugged in.

My HTPC goes to sleep as well, but I generally shut down my gaming computer.

I usually let mine fall asleep because I use my pc frequently in short bursts. I watch a TV show on my HTPC, get up to have some dinner, and it has put itself to sleep by the time I get back from nuking a hot pocket. Before I had a PC that had a decent sleep function, I would just get up and turn it off. I still shut it down regularly, about 1x/wk.

sleep, but I've run into sound / mouse stuttering issues when coming out of sleep which require a restart to fix

it doesn't happen often enough for me to stop using sleep, but it's occurred enough for me to remember the issue

Fuck that. Those programs get about 18 hours/day to run...and I don't need to pay the electric bill for someone else's benefit.

As old and "dead-tech" as my current rig is, it still draws about 250 watts at idle with the monitor turned off. (per kill-a-watt)
We try to cut the light bill wherever possible nowadays.

I've never seen any real benefit of folding, SETI, or any of the other distributed computing programs. The concept is good...but what has it really accomplished?

I've got 6 home servers that run 24/7 for one reason or another... FUN!

Shut down, don't want to waste the juice. Gets annoying if I forget that I should have done something, and just need to Google something though. Which is why I bought a brand new laptop:).

I checked mine with my kill-a-watt and my computer uses 3w both in sleep mode and shut down (unless of course I turn off the switch on the PSU), so it doesn't make sense not to use sleep.

When I go to sleep I shut it down. Only time I don't is if I'm DLing stuff or rendering.
