I leave it alone, goes into standby on its own.
Since I am always doing something with it, (game, NEF, schoolwork, shopping, research) it doesnt make sense to shut it off manually every 10 minutes. I'll just be powering it on again right away.

Shutdown.

In nearly 15 years, I've not yet had a desktop that will either sleep, standby or hibernate and recover.

sleep. and it actually works too. a cold boot usually takes a minute or two, wake from sleep takes ~5 seconds and it's ready to work.

I put my computer in sleep most of the time, and every few weeks when the computer starts feeling slow, I shut it down at night.

My home computer I shut down, because it loads reasonably quick. And when I turn it on, I normally do other stuff while its booting up.

Work computer, I just ctrl+alt+del lock the computer cause it takes AGES to boot up (due to log-on scripts and bloated corporate software). Also, I can only remote desktop into it if its turned on.

i just walk away, compy runs 24/7

i actually pulled the sleep button off my keyboard because the idiots that made it decided it was a good idea to place it right nextto the one that opens your email client

Why didn't you just remap it?

Shutdown.

In nearly 15 years, I've not yet had a desktop that will either sleep, standby or hibernate and recover.

Hibernate is easy - it's writing RAM to a file (hiberfil.sys) to the HDD.
Standby/sleep is another story. So many motherboard BIOS' issues with that. Both my ASUS P6T7 and REXIII boards do sleep fairly well although about one in ten times I lose USB on wake.

If you don't have a RAID with a "flight checklist" BIOS, it's easier to just shutdown. :D

I find that with the Areca hosts even sleep mode recovery is slow because POST is still running in the background, the display is OFF so the wake time while faster than booting; is still lengthy.

In Windows preferences for power management set sleep button to ignore.

ripping it out was easier and took 5 seconds, this KB didnt come with custom software for key mapping and i didn't care enough to download a program to do it, I had a pair of pliers and would never use the sleep function anyway

I just throw it away and buy a new one. By the time I've finished a session, it's obsolete anyway.

That depends. If I'm just doing something else for a while, I just leave it. The screen will turn off in 15 mins and the system will go to sleep in 2 hours or something.

But on sunday night, for example, I shut it down completely. I won't be using the computer until monday afternoon so there's no point in leaving it powered on.

if I'm going to be away from my desktop for more than 2-3 hours, I shut it down. otherwise I just let it run. it drops into hibernate after an hour.

same with my laptop, though I've really got to change it... ever since I reformatted to windows 7 on my laptop, it doesn't wake up properly from hibernation. it doesn't crash or anything, but I get no audio until I reboot it (which isn't usually a problem if all I'm doing is surfing the web on my couch while watching tv)

I shut the desktop down when I'm done with it. Too much of a power hog to leave on all the time. My laptop and server are programmer to shut down automatically at the end of the day. The iPad is usually just left sleeping.

I never used to use sleep since that has been my experience as well. However, I tried it again about a year ago in Windows 7 and it works exactly as described. In fact, when I used to use media center to record my shows, it would come out of sleep mode on it's own, record the show, then go back to sleep. The power savings are definitely worth it.

Shut down. I'm not on it most of the time, so it's not a big hassle to have to wait for it to boot up. Usually I just go get coffee or whatever.
