One that has porn on it, that noone in the house will fess up to.

One that instantly blasts you with pop up ads and spyware the minute Windows boots up.

One that locks up constantly, and one that makes dad say "we need to get that friend of yours over here, you know, the one that knows alot about computers".

A guy at work bought an e-machine 2600+ over xmas. Has 256MB DDR RAM and onboard vid and sound (I think its an Nforce based mobo but not sure) and a semi-decent CD burner.

Probably fairly represenitive of people that have bought new PCs within the past year.
 
All the average people bought the nice cheap smellerons because they don't realize it's slower than a Pentium 4. They just see the price tag.
 
all that matters is that they're running integrated intel graphics boards. If people would just upgrade that ONE thing, they'd find a lot less pressure from their kidlets to upgrade.

Mostly Dell/Gateway/H-Paq/eMachines;

Celery 333 through 1.7, PIII 600, some P4's, few AMD's🙁

Average of 128MB with 20-40GB HDD

Most with burners 8 to 24X range, many with DVD-ROM's

lol....the kids in the house usually know more about PC's than the adults


I'm sure the avg comp user has a celeron, Gateway about to be extinct, the hard drives have been lost because all the other mfg parts are going bad or have gone bad. Absolutely no CD writer, maybe a DVD player cuz they didn't have a home version DVD player when they bought the PC and thought it would be cool to watch on the computer only to find out that once they figured out how to use it after several calls to tech support that the 17" monitor wasn't much to look at. And who wants to sit in an office chair while watching movies anyway? not the average person I can tell you that.


 
Most people I do business with for computer maintenance, are just surfing the web and doing normal office work and have on average a PIII-500 to at most a Duron 1200 under the hood with 256 - 512 MB of RAM and a relatively small 30 GB - 40 GB HDD.

Those that use the machines as a daily tool have invested in or are planning to invest in a LCD screen. One customer has even gone dual head with two NEC screens, but he is the exception. Most others still have a 17" CRT on the desk.

Graphics cards are not very powerful on average. A few ATI Rage 128s, a Radeon 7000, a boatload of GF2-MXs... the most modern card was bought for the dual head setup: Radeon 9000.

EDIT: Most newer machines that I work on and sell are NOT Intel powered but AMD rigs. It's just the simple more bang for your buck argument... especially for such low requirements as office work there is no need to buy a P4 2.4 GHz. Especially if all he/she does IS really just office stuff then I usually recommend a low end CPU but therefore get a nice LCD display setup.
