One that has porn on it, that noone in the house will fess up to.

One that instantly blasts you with pop up ads and spyware the minute Windows boots up.

One that locks up constantly, and one that makes dad say "we need to get that friend of yours over here, you know, the one that knows alot about computers".

One that has so many icons loading in the taskbar at startup, that it reaches halfway to the Start button.

One that has icons for EVERYTHING on the desktop.

One that has so many processes running on it, and they can't figure out why your PIII 733 backup computer pwnz their new 2.4 GHz celly e-machine. 😛

Average computer is probably a 1GHz CPU with 256MB of RAM and a 20GB HD.

My Ex has a 266 Mhz clone running Win98, she use it primairly to chech her email, surfing and playing solitaire . Which is common among most of the people I know.

here goes... the best answer:

What kind of a computer does the average person have?

One that's WAYYYYYY more powerful than the average person needs
(since the average person only uses it for surfing the web, checking email, and downloading mp3's and porn.)

edit: Of course, though, the average person will be replacing their computer in less than 2 years because

He, he, you've just described my father in law's computer...

I'm building a new one for him out of left over parts I have tonight.

I hate installing AOL on it for him, he could have broadband for what he pays for AOL

My FIL:

Athlon 800mhz, 256mb, win98, 17" monitor, I don't recall if it has a burner or not...

My Mother:

Just upgraded from a 533celly to an Athlon XP 1800+, 512mb, Radeon 7500, CDR, 19" monitor, Win2k

My SIL:

Just upgraded from a P2-233 to an Athlon XP 1800+, 256mb, Radeon 9200, CD, 17" monitor, WinXP

My friend's parents:

Just upgraded from a Micron 400mhz (something like that) to an Athlon XP 2000+, Radeon 9800, 512mb, CDRW, 19" monitor, WinXP....so they could use Office, Email, and solitaire. 🙂

My guess is that the average American with a computer will have something like 1.5GHz, 512MB DDR, 64MG Video Card, and 80GB HD.

Now as for me.... Ha! Look at my main squeeze! To me this is normal and ready for upgrade within the next 2 months.
😉

Average person and average business is entirely different. Businesses and even educational insitututes have set budgets, so they usually upgrade by the batch every few years or so.

My school library's lowest end machines are P3-1Ghz/256MB/19" CRT Dell's. Several newer batches include P4-2Ghz/512MB/17"LCD to P4-2.6C/512MB/17"LCD/DVD+RW

I don't know, but I'd imagine the average Anandtecher would have something similar to my rig or what KarenMarie posted.

I'm still running an Athlon XP 1700+ on a K7S5A...that setup was so 2 years ago...
