i dont hate any kinds of music, ive even found some bluegrass i like. i generally listen to ska/ punk most of the time, but ive been known to listen to heavy metal, rock, hip hop, blues and some rap. house/ tekno i like as well, even if it is repetitive. i like the beat, and on a ood stereo is fairly entertaining usually. hell, i even like some country.

I believe a band like Good Charlotte or Fall Out Boy would be considered emo. The definition has largely changed from what I used to call emo.

my 13 yr old told me (and i agreed based on what i knew) that fall out boy wasnt emo. they told me wheezer was tho, which boggled my brain.

Yeah Im trv3 grim kvlt ;)

Reggae has a commercial sound?

Of course! Just think of all those famous reggae artists. Bob Marley... ummm... Ziggy Marley... Damian Marley... oh, and UB40!

go to a real music store and check out the reggae section. tons of bands there, too bad you only have been exposed to the marley section...

If they're not then I don't know what is I guess.

Are you saying reggae does have a commercial sound? Are you saying that there are scads of famous reggae artists out there? I obviously don't listen to much reggae (and to be fair, I actually like most reggae I hear). Then again, most people who bitch about rap are basing it off 50 Cent and Big Tymers because that's what they hear on the radio. For me to come in and tell them to check out Sage Francis or Aesop Rock would probably help them find some hip hop that wasn't about violence or drugs... but I'd never make the claim that these artists were famous.

Worst would probably be anything played on the Bagpipes, followed by the pre-packaged pop-punk / emo / whatever them kids are listening to these days.

What you know as "emo" music isn't real emo music, just shitty radio rock.

The real "emo" (ugh I hate this term, really should be post-hardcore) bands from the late 80's / early 90's were pretty rad.

Polka is the worst.
Now that that's out of the way, I don't care for Grunge or "nu-metal." Also don't really like hair bands. I hate showtunes. I don't like "soft rock." I hate stuff like the Beatles and Elvis. I don't like most of the "R&B" or rap type stuff. Jazz isn't my thing.

Give me some death metal or some prog and I'm happy.

I really didn't expect to see that argument pop up here. Is it 2001 again? Also see Indian Summer.

I listen to almost everything, but there are a few genres with only a handful of songs I can stand. They are:

country
rap
hip-hop (really not sure if this is the right name; it's the club sounding mostly black inspired inner city stuff)
christian/gospel

Lots of mainstream rap is shit but there are a lot of good underground artists that have great songs.

Cyne, Atmosphere, Blue Scholars, Sage Francis, and Brother Ali are all great rappers that talk about things deeper than clubs, sex, and killing punk-ass bitches.

Most rap, particularly the gansta variety, screaming/growling hardcore stuff, and most classic rock (i.e. random squealing guitar noises).

If it has good melody and lyrics (or no lyrics) then I'm happy. Harmony is even better and a good beat can help too.

Exactly. See Fugazi, Nation of Ulysses, Jawbreaker. All awesome bands, but many of them were considered emo at the time, but totally different than the emo of now.

Exactly. When I first heard the term "emo" it was attributed to emotional hardcore. The term just became homogenized over the past ten years.

famous is a relative term. rap artists have no idea who the clash is, but they are definitely famous. conversely, most punkers have no idea (or care) who akon is. there are tons of famous reggae bands/ singers. listing them may or may not do any good.

as for the whole commercial sound thing, im not getting what you mean by commercial sound. most reggae follows a formula, just like rock and country (and pretty much every style of music), thats what gives it its unique sounds. marley was a poet, so was tosh. both were activists as well, just like a lot of the older reggae bands. they sang about what they felt. i dont see how that is commercial. the fact that they sell albums gives me a hint that they have gone commercial, but that is pretty much the goal of every band/ act in the business. the ones that "hold out" on going commercial (i hate that term) are just indie elitists that think their songs are better than others, new and too good to make money off of.

Modern country music grates on me. It is, without a doubt, the worst genre of music.
