what is the US known for?

in terms of quality products.

japan is known for cars and electronics.
italy is known for exotics and fashion/clothing.
cuba is known for cigars.
colombia is known for coffee.
china is known for lead toys and tainted milk.

what is the us known for in the international eye?

I think it depends on the person who is viewing the U.S. Somebody may see the entertainment industry, i.e. music, television, and movies. Some may note science and technology - that entire NASA thing and effectively it was ARPANET that became the internet (of course with the help of Al Gore). Some may see the sort of 'cowboy spirit' with muscle cars, Harley Davidson, cowboys & Indians. Others could see the military strength, and some can see the generosity.

So in essence I think it depends on the mind-set of the viewer and not necessarily what is being viewed.
