I let her get comfortable on her pillow, and then I put my arm under the pillow while
my head is still on my own pillow. It takes alot of the pressure off my arm and I like
sleeping on my side anyway. We can usually fall asleep like that and not wake up for
quite a while to change positions.

Another way I do it is to get in the position and then kinda rotate our bodies so we
are half laying on our sides, and half on our backs with her head as close to my chest
as I can get. I put my lower arm under her head and bend it across her chest.

Classical Ladder Theory
A great satirical work, because while it's funny, it smacks heavily of the truth.

Pay particular attention to the section on "Cuddle Bitches." (Parental Warning: This page makes use of the F bomb!)

For guys unacquainted with Ladder Theory, it is even worse. The cuddle bitch often thinks he is on the good ladder as opposed to the real ladder. So he gets all excited about his position instead of realizing he is being completely used. So this poor tool is really setting himself up for a fall at that point.

until spoonage?

Wow, talk about going slowly in a relationship... :)

I also enjoy spooning with close friends, male or female... :) It's intimate, but it can also be platonic-intimate.

When I had a boyfriend, he'd leave for his dance tours/trips, and I'd spoon with some of his friends. Everyone was cool and understanding and respectful like that... no funny business. I also spoon with my friend Fawn, etc.

Yeah, because we all know guys would think such a situation (spooning with your friend's woman) is entirely platonic.

I make that explicitly clear from the very beginning. Communication is key in any relationship, platonic or otherwise.

You're not well-versed in Classical Ladder Theory if you believe this.

Classical Ladder Theory?

If it makes anyone feel any better, I also spoon with my sisters... to me, it's a way of being close to people I care for. I won't do it with a guy I just met, but I will do it with close and trusted friends...

The point is that any normal male is going to be really aroused by such a situation, and that's hardly something I feel is appropriate for platonic relationships. I also believe that most guys think that a willing-to-spoon woman leaves the door open for more possibilities, regardless of whether or not she says it's platonic. What about platonic kisses, sex, etc.?

I'm not rigid, I just know that I wouldn't want my girlfriend arousing all of my friends in such a way.

I see where you're coming from, but I guess I have a different level of comfort with my friends. Every male friend I've spooned with has never tried to do anything more than spoon, and they've all remained "relaxed." In such an embrace, it'd be pretty easy for me to tell if anything was aroused back there, and I've never had a guy poke me, accidentally or otherwise, in such a situation. I spoon with guys who I consider my brothers... Minh, Angel, Matt, etc... not Joe Blow off the street, you know?

Platonic kisses on the cheek and lips are fine... platonic kisses with tongue? Heck no.

And "platonic sex", no... but those are my personal limits, others may have varying degrees of comfort with their friends.

There as an article in The Art Of Kissing by William Cane which discusses so-called "platonic kissing" and it totally left me scratching my head. My gf's male friends will kiss her on the cheek and give her a hug in greeting. That seems normal to me. The book talks about it going deeper than that and discusses motivations like "Just to get closer to my close friends" or "Just to see how it feels to kiss other people than my lover passionately."

Gimme a freakin' break. No guy will ever buy into that, and I'm doubtful most women would either.

Well there's my new thing learned for today - another form of the word "spoon." Never heard it used to describe this before.

Is there another? I'm sure that people were doing this even back when everyone just ate with their hands. :)

Yup, it's right up there with inventing an anal bum cover, but Sean Connery has been working hard on that one.

Where in the midwest? I'm from the midwest as well, and I don't know any people as liberal with spoonship.

Throw me in the "I don't believe platonic relationships are possible if either involved are attracted to the other" camp. You're an attractive woman, so I honestly can't see a guy thinking it was completely platonic, but perhaps I'm not as physically transcendental as you.

Perhaps this is an extension of the materialist vs. mentalist in the mind-body problem? I bond with close friends on an intellectually (mentalist) intimate level, but I can't on a physical (materialist) level.

Kokomo, Indiana... and Rochester Hills, Michigan.

I spooned/cuddled with my girl friends Justine and Margie in high school, and cuddled with my girl/guy friends at the University of Michigan... my boyfriend Matt K., his roommate Minh, my boy Matt L., and my friend Jordan. I had a certain level of comfort with all of them, and Minh/Matt/Jordan NEVER pushed their limits.

I bond with close friends on both mentalist & materialist levels... varying degrees of each with different people, but still. I dunno, maybe I'm an anomaly.

Brodie: You know how when someone lays with their back to you and you lay behind them really close and you throw one arm over them ?
TS: It's called spooning.
Brodie: Yeah, but you gotta put the other arm somewhere. You can either lay on it or shove it between your bodies. The only other option is to stretch it above your head. But sometimes my arm pops out of socket when I'm sleeping like that. So I was constantly searching for someplace to keep my arm while still laying close to her.
Gwen: And?
Brodie: What do you mean, "and?" That's like a metaphor for our whole relationship.

The only problem with spooning is............... you get your arm trapped under your GF and you can't get it out so it falls alseep and you don't want to yank it out or you will wake up your GF :(

Remember Chandler & Janice (Friend's) :)

Even you though there's clear communication regarding the platonic relationship or that they've never "tried' anything ... it's still hard to believe that they're "relaxed" during a spooning session. I mean it's more of a physical response than anything. Granted they understand and deep down inside don't want to try anything, I can't believe that all the guys would "relaxed" ... not possible! =)

I'm a pretty touchy-feely guy, but in that position, it's pretty much as close as I can physically get to her. Every part of my body that can touch her at one time is doing so.

It's one of the short list of things that is explicitly reserved for one person and one person alone. No matter how close a friend I am to one of my female friends, I'd not get in that position unless I was hoping to get somewhere else (MAKE A JUMP :D). I would likely not push my limit, but I'd definitely be hoping she does the whole time.

Roger that. Seems wierd to do that with platonic friends, but that's just my cultural composition.
