What is the point of VTEC on an automatic?

Blow up the tranny? I don't think they ever sold Integra GSRs with autos anyway....... Honda manuals are pretty tough.

I have a friend that went all motor on his 96 GSR, it was pretty quick, he got it down to the low 13's. His tranny lasted about a year and 1/2.

Don't know what to say about that. My friend builds some crazy motors and has never had a problem with trannys. I'm tempted to say operator error.....

I have a buddy with a VTEC Integra who shifts consistently below 3500 RPM. He just has no clue how to drive the car so that VTEC actually has any effect on the performance of the car. Needless to say the car doesn't accelerate better than a Civic the way he drives it. When he lets me drive it, I take that to limit and I try to keep it above 5200 RPM. I'm not a fan of Hondas, but I have to say that it is a very fun car to drive if you drive it right.

LOL! I'm sure you scare the crap out of him too!😀 My friend's friend drives (drove? not sure if he still has it) his Celica GT-S like that. That car is really piss slow when you drive it "normally".

Yeah it sucks when you drive it "normally" to the point that I couldn't live it if I drove it like he does. He does scared when I drive it like it was meant to be driven, but he admires the sound that his car puts out (so do I). In fact it is awesome when you are driving it downtown and you have the windows open and you are between two buildings to reflect the sound. I think the sound would rule in a tunnel. The funny thing is that as much as he tries he can't drive his own car like it should be driven.

Are you suggesting that the car/tranny wasn't built to be used at it's true potential? What's the point of having a VTEC engine if you can't drive it in the range where you can actually get its rated output. I'm not a big fan of Honda but I think they're a quality company that wouldn't mate a good engine with an under-rated tranny.

I drive my car without any regard for stuff like that because I know it was built for driving (10 year, 120,000 mile drivetrain warranty).

No... not that at all, because any cars will be fux0r up if you drive it under worse than severe condition. Not only that, I know of three cars that have or had transmission problems, and yes, they're all Hondas.

I live in Houston and make the daily commute downtown in a 5-speed. It's not THAT bad. It is a little annoying when you're in gridlock, but then an automatic is a little annoying anytime your NOT in gridlock. 😉

True, but shifting at red line is not severe conditions in my book. Shifting at red line before the engine is warmed up is really bad, but once the engine is heated up it should be perfectly fine coming close to red line.



As for tranny problems, I know that maximum torque on those engines was around 120-125 ft-lbs and the tranny should be rated to handle that torque at whatever RPM the engine is running at. Sure trannys go bad, but it seems like these are not stock vehicles that these issues are happening to. I don't know what shifting at high rpms should do to a tranny other than put some extra wear and tear on it.

I think the only redeeming feature of an Integra is the fact that you can use that rejuvenation of torque at a higher rpm, otherwise it would totally suck. If you don't use that 2nd cam, then why not get a regular civic or any other econobox.
