not only that. i think it's also a popular foreign language in asia too. i pretty sure english remains no.1 in asia.

EDIT: I should have learnt spanish when I lived in AZ. My venezuelan buddy told me that with spanish it's easy to learn portuguese and italian; french comes from the same romantic root, but more difficult.

It seems like a very widely known language.

I have no statistical facts, but some friends of mine spent a summer in Europe, and when people didn't understand english too well, they understood spanish (my friends speak spanish too). This wasn't Spain either. This was in Germany, Poland, and Holland.
 
i heard somewhere taht they nearly chose Spanish as the official language to use in international meeting in Europe and UN. then somehow English prevailed
