I know German and Spanish fairly well, and I'm trying to pick up Italian and French. I would say that the most popular non-English language people are learning is Spanish, at least in the US. It's very difficult to retain your knowledge of languages if you can't use them, and I think it goes mostly without saying that Spanish has the greatest utility for many Americans.

When the English-speaking folks controlled more technology and capital than any other lanuage.
So, my guess is somewhere between 1850 and 1900.

I wish we could have one universal language.

Heck, I'd learn any other language if it were universal. Even the stupid ones. Yeah, you know which ones I'm talking about.

Those.

I think you can trace the dominance of the english language back to when England controlled much of the world. Back when "the sun never set on the english empire"

Kind of hard to throw off that kind of influence :p

Not then or now, and certainly not in combined tech and money.
Don't confuse Japanese consumers love of the latest robot Dog/cemera phone with research dollars, and things like landing a man on the moon.

:D
