First, Sony and MS need to just release the price already, holy hell this is ridiculous...

There is some sweepstakes fine print which points to Series X being $599.

Given the hesitance to announce pricing they must be astronomical. Digital Foundry has speculated this in their Halo delay video talk. Are we really looking at flagship phone level pricing?

For me, $599 is too much, $499 is a maybe for me (for either console). Especially at launch, I can't see myself spending big $$ for just 1 or 2 games.

$599 for the Series X makes sense if it allows MS to be really aggressive on the Series S's price.

The PS5 standard is going to be no less than $499, regardless of what MS does.

BTW, I think you're right, they are both waiting to announce the price until the very last second because they know it's not going to go over well. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't reveal the price until early November.

It say's the 1st Prize winners recieve an Xbox Series X and a copy of Halo Infinite, so it's $599 for the console and a full retail copy of a new game, possibly a more expensive, deluxe version of Halo Infinite ($99 MSRP?). The console itself won't be $599 but less.

My guess is $499 for the PS5 and XSX. The Digital Only version of the PS5 might be $50 cheaper but that's as low as I can see it go. If both Sony and MS offer a version that's $399, I'd be pleasantly surprised.

Where have you been for the last three+ years man? :) Flagship phones are WELL over $1k these days, folders have broken new territory by cracking the $2k barrier, and with margin to spare too I hear. And 600 bucks for the new consoles is probably not too unrealistic, there's a 1TB SSD in the SeX as well as a fairly large and fairly potent SoC and 16GB of relatively fast GDDR. For the first time in a really long time now consoles are getting some reasonably high performance components, so of course that's going to mean customers end up paying a price.

And high profile games are getting super costly to develop while the now standard $60 launch price hasn't moved for...hell, I can't even remember. 15 years? More? No wonder we've seen a rash of scummy ways to extort more money out of gamers post-launch, like loot boxes and season passes and other crap like that. So be prepared to pay even more for new games in the year(s) to come. :p

What do you think the price will be based on previous releases?

I don't think we can actually base it on previous releases as they are not cheaping out on parts this round. Previous gen had garbage CPU and harddisks. This gen has equivalent parts to a good gaming PC.

$500 is the max I will pay. As of now neither have any games at launch that will make me get one at launch. I highly doubt I will get a Series X at all though considering there are no exclusives for at least 2 years and if there is something I want I can play it on my X1X.

My guess is that PS5 with optical drive will be $500 and the one without will be $400.

MS is completely out of their mind thinking people are going to pay $600 for a console that has no exclusives for at least 2 years.

$400 and only when there are several exclusives I want to play. I'm perfectly fine waiting several years for the library to build up and get a Black Friday deal.

Price gap probably will be less than $100. I think there will be a third SKU with double the SSD size btw.
Or the same SSD, with a HDD additional? Or does the hardware support that? (Game would have to be copied / streamed to the SSD to be played. Honestly surprised, given the sizes of games, and the technology involved, why they didn't go with that sort of arrangement in the first place.)

This is the first I've heard of that.

Link?

The BR drive doesn't cost that much. Double SSD is just a theory at this point and very well might not happen.

There is only an additional nvme slot available. Sony said the drive has to be a certain speed and no products on the market are currently fast enough.

So you just think there will be one and haven't heard anything about it? Not being a dick, was just curious if there was actual talk about a 3rd sku or anything from MS.

Any more than about $400 and I'd rather just put that towards my PC. I'm not the least bit surprised at a $500-600 price at launch. Its actually descent hardware this time. Last gen was garbage even at launch.

The issue mainly with the PS5 is that 825 GB is a little small. The XSX is 1 TB which is fine for now.

PS5 is disappointingly small. Must be a cost cutting measure.

We will need to see what adding storage is going to cost. AFAIK the pricing on the Seagate Xbox cards hasn't been revealed yet.

I am still not clear on what storage is going to work in PS5, supposedly any NVMe, but it needs to be PCIe4 and be capable of 5GB/s I guess (currently 1TB is ~$200)? Is there going to be a certification program to ensure you buy the right ones?

IIRC the drive needs to be decently faster than 5.5 GB/sec for a reason I don't remember.

The weird storage on the ps5 will definitely drive up costs. I'd expect a sony certification. I think the question is if there will be some sort of gatekeeper chip that prevents installing commodity drives that meet the spec when they are available.

My feeling is that the prices are gonna be:

Series S - $349 (could be $299 if MS really wants to make a splash)
PS5 Digital - $499
PS5 - $549 - the PS5 and the Digital could be $50 less
Series X - $599

Microsoft has much greater ability to price their console low. I would be shocked if they let Sony undercut them by $50-100.
