Gawd damn. $5.15 is pocket change:Q

You can say that again. You could barely survive on $5.15/hour assuming 40 hour work weeks, no vacations, you live in the ghetto in a 1 bedroom apartment, eat nothing but instant ramen and don't use any water/electricity/heat/no ATOT.

<--- Minimum wage, been there, done that. No thanks :D

Santa cruz's minimum wage is $12/hr w/o benefits, $11/hr with benefits. I'd hate to see how much a mcdonald's value meal costs there.

What is the difference between federal and state min wage?

Is federal the lowest that each state must set?

each state can set their own but it must be at least the same or higher than the federal minimum

for all of you that say it is too low, your calculations are only using 40 hours a week, there is NO reason why a person with minimal skills (ie that is why you get a job that pays minimum wage) can't work 60, or 70 or 80 hours a week if they desire more income than what 40 hours of work provides (ie 2 or 3 jobs)

or they can improve their skills to get a job that pays more

artificial wage rates set by governments are unnecessary, IMO

We've had this argument in the past, and I don't think that either side budged an inch during what quickly turned into a flame-fest. The anti-minimum wage people stuck to what their Economics text books say about the supply and demand of labor. The pro-minimum wage folks (like myself) did a good job of explaining that you can't afford to raise a family or get additional education when only making $200 a week, but it certainly wasn't enough to change anyone's opinion.

I'll say this, though. Anyone who thinks that you can effectively raise kids or take a full load of college courses while working 60 to 80 hours a week can't tell time very well. I don't want to see this get ugly, however, so I'm going to stay out of this one.

What I have today I can attribut to starting out by working 2+ jobs in my younger years. I learned and studied on my own in order to get ahead. My family never suffered or did without and at the same time I kept moving into better jobs because I had a neverending thirst for knowledge.

Minimum wage isn't meant to raise a family on if you only want to work 40hrs/wk. If you have ambition you will learn and earn more.

That really doesn't sound right.
The city itself is hiring people at $8.78/hr.

At minimum wage you'll be

"Living In A Van Down By The River"

Also waiters in TX make 2.13 an hour, in CA they get minimum wage $6.75.
Hope the guy that was complaining about tips knows this! :|
