It differs from state to state, I think. In South Carolina, I made $5.15 at one of my jobs last summer. In Nebraska, I started at $6.50 at a job I worked there. I think minimum wage in the southern states is lower than it is in the northern states. My mother has said that several times.

The minimum wage is currently $4.55 in Quebec (or $7.00 Canadian)

Anyone who thinks that's more than it needs to be is obviously not a student with a part-time job.

Yeah, real smart. Work 60, 70, 80 hours a week.. turn into a mindless slave.. yeah, you'll REALLY get yourself out of the hole by doing that. Improve your skills? How do you suggest doing that when you can't even make enough money to feed yourself, let alone pay for education? Minimum wages should be above poverty wages, and companies should stop being cheap-ass bastards and pay their employees more. It would improve society as a whole. Damn cheap bastards, the same ones that pay asians nickels an hour for almost literally slave work. Why is it that the larger a corporation gets the more evil it gets?

What is the difference between federal and state min wage?

Is federal the lowest that each state must set?

each state can set their own but it must be at least the same or higher than the federal minimum

-----

for all of you that say it is too low, your calculations are only using 40 hours a week, there is NO reason why a person with minimal skills (ie that is why you get a job that pays minimum wage) can't work 60, or 70 or 80 hours a week if they desire more income than what 40 hours of work provides (ie 2 or 3 jobs)

or they can improve their skills to get a job that pays more

artificial wage rates set by governments are unnecessary, IMO

Oh, I definitely agree. One of my parents' friends was visiting us from a suburb of Washington (D.C.) and she said that the house we live in would cost close to $400,000 in the area they live in. It costs half that here in SC.

I make $11.65 working @ Home Depot :)

But that is nothing. I figure I need to make about $15 to get a home. ( 31k a year ) I need a 40% raise.
