I built my own PC about a year or 2 ago and i bought with it an AMD R9 290 graphics card from XFX. it has crossfire capability but i was wondering with which graphics cards could it work with. would any R9 work? or would it have to be an R9 in the 200 series?

You could get another 290 / 290x or maybe 390/390x (though half the ram won't work) of any brand. But honestly I'd recommend selling it and buying a newer card, either Fury for $250-300 or 480 @ $200-250. Or just wait a few more months for Vega which will be AMD's new high end cards.

I'd wait until Vega drops and compare then. I had a 290 and added a second, and it's just so spotty that I cant count on it working. When it works its awesome but thats probably only half the time.

if you plan getting crossfire dont buy a card if your games dont support CF,better get a single gpu, hold for Vega. And if you want a placeholder get a cheap gtx 1070

I would wait for the new cards, or if you need an upgrade now get a Fury if on sale or go for a 1070+
