What is so bad about ipod?

I just ordered an ipod and the first person I told about it tells me that the ipod sucks. I have come across lots of these people in the past and not one of them has given me a compelling reason to even believe that the ipod in fact does in fact suck.

The best reasons I have heard are
- the battery
- it only works with itunes

Sure the battery might not be replaceable but how many people will this really affect? I bet mine will break before I have to worry about replacing the battery. I think it does suck that the battery is not replaceable but the fear is way overblown.

Other reasons I have heard are that it does not support FLAC or OGG. In my 11 years on the internet, I have come across 0 flac files and 0 ogg files. Do I give a rat's ass if the ipod does not support these formats?

Can someone actually give me a compelling reason why the ipod sucks or why there are other players that are better than the ipod out there? If not, I guess I can conclude that no one really has any valid reason to say the ipod sucks, it is just the trendy thing to do.

You can use RockBox firmware on your iPod which bypasses both the requirement to use iTunes and adds support for numerous codecs; FLAC and OGG included.

There are tons of 3rd party software out there to use instead of itunes.

DRM and AFAIK you can't really mount it as a removable hard drive (which it is) and edit its' file structure yourself. Everything has to be done through iTunes.

I just found that really funny, that you say that like it's a good thing.
And some people like to rip their CDs to FLAC, as it's a lossless format, so they get better quality sound. You may not care about that, but some people do, and to them, it's a reason the iPod sucks.

I will tell you what I find attractive about the ipod.

You can search through a track using a timebar.

Even if it is a 100 hour track, you can get to the middle of it very quickly. ipod wins just because of this as far as I am concerned. I still have not heard of one of these "better" players out there that have this ability.

No built in FM tuner.

i'll give you that, but if you have an mp3 player with all your favorite songs, why bother even listening to the radio?

As I mentioned in the other thread.. at the gym I go to and a lot of others, they have TVs that send the audio over FM. While I usually just listen to my MP3s, sometimes I want to listen to what's on the TV. And I don't want to bring an extra device just to do that..

while that may be true for music, ther are numerous work arounds, and as for data, as long as you keep the system folders in tact, and use a client that can write to fat32 (anything these days) it works great as removable storage

For my Zen Vision:M as a comparision...

1. It has an FM tuner
2. I can allocate 4, 8, 12, or 16 GB as a flash disk
3. It was just as much as the Video, but it looks better (screen is a lot better)
4. I can use Windows Media Player or Explorer

You can use Apple loseless. What I find interesting is that no one brings up the issue of it not being able to play WMA. Now WMA is something that more than 0.5% of the market actually uses. I use it but guess I will be scalling back to AAC for now.

I love my ipod.

About the only thing I would give up the ipod for is an Itronix made mp3 player, all ruggedized like their laptops. Other than that, I am sticking with apple.

FLAC isn't proprietary.

My take is that I hate to take part in large comulitive mouse-trap-like products. Considering myself somewhat of a savvy consumer.
I'd much rather do some reaserch and purchase a more self chosen product that might better fit my needs than purchase a generic propriatary over priced service/gadget.
ie, AOL, ipod stuff, or any other gimmicky type stuff.

Lets not forget native Divx and Xvid support

My main gripe is the fact you need to use some sort of software to get songs onto the Ipod (is true no?) , yeah i keep hearing how easy Itunes is to use, but i find drag and drop through Explorer to be easiest, never need any additional software and i can use it as a portable hd (I have an iRiver h120)

Now that iTunes has been revamped, there's no real reason to hate it anymore (IMHO)

That's not the point. Some people just don't want to deal with any extra software.

Any extra software? How hell are you gonna transfer the files to your device other than using it as a Mass Storage device?

How else are you going to download protected music from the internet and transfer it to your media player? You're gonna need either WMP or iTunes.
