normally i would offer a compelling reply but i have to ask you, do you read this forum?

if you did you would know that nearly everyone on here is:

- model hot
- has had sexual escapades that would make rocco siffredi jealous
- thinks any celeb other than alba is gross-fat-icky
- has zero-debt
- owns a ferrari outright (see above)
- lives in a palatial estate owned outright (see above above)

there's more but i'm tired.

goodnight now. i'm going to go listen to my ipod.

That's not the point. Some people just don't want to deal with any extra software.

Any extra software? How hell are you gonna transfer the files to your device other than using it as a Mass Storage device?

How else are you going to download music from the internet and transfer it to your media player? You're gonna need either WMP or iTunes.

Not if you buy CDs. I can put music on my Creative Vision using explorer. Granted, I usually use the horrible software it came with, but I discovered this as an option as well.

Whoa...taking the very words I was about to say out of my mouth. I find it interesting that Steve Jobs was able to save Apple, a computer company, with the IPod that he had to make work on Windows, his arch rival.....

Not to mention that it can not record tv like other PMP's can!

Let's see. You only have a few options of getting music to your player:

1) USB Mass Storage Device. Drag and drop in Explorer
2) iTunes/WMP for purchased music, transferred automatically to your PMP.

Someone made the comment that you can rip music to your computer and transfer the music via Explorer. HELLO! That still requires a seperate program to rip your music. So much for "Not everyone wants to use additional software." Both WMP and iTunes offer that feature within the app itself.

$250 for 30 gigs, plays video, better quality than any other brand... I bought an iRiver 20gb because of all the praise iRiver gets on this forum, but it was twice as thick as an iPod and just flat out stopped working after a week. If I buy an mp3 player again, it will definately be an iPod.

Same here, I've never bought music off iTunes and my entire library is MP3

You can use as much of an iPod's storage as you want as a removable hard drive... no allocation of nothing. And for the Zen, ou have to use the Windows Media Player proprietary file transfer system. Sure, it shows up in Explorer, but that doesn't mean it is.

I'm not sure what is meant by whoever claims they don't want additional software, but if you have mp3s on your computer or listen to music, you will have to have SOMETHING to listen to it.

I prefer WINAMP, which can rip CDs, which is the only form of music I will ever buy. I don't have/want an iPod, I don't like or want to use iTunes.

However, if you use eMusic to buy music, you can still download and transfer music without additional software. No WMP, no iTunes.

from a guy who owns an video iPod 30gb

1) no FM Tuner
2) No Xvid / Divx Support (was almost a deal breaker for me)
3) Horrid battery life (can't even play 2 anime eposides back to back without charging it)
4) No way to restructure how to sort your music.
5) Minimalist options (can't even adjust screen brightness)
6) Forced to use iTunes to transfer music

#6 wouldn't be so bad if iTunes didn't force quicktime on me. Still i wish i could transfer music and everything via explorer.

Don't get me wrong, even with all those faults, I still consider the ipod video the best player out there atm. but it is no where near perfect.

Itunes is the problem. That and the limitations put on you by Apple. My wife has a Shuffle and 30GB video. She has all sorts of problems using both with itunes (because they don't allow you to use 2 Ipods on one machine!).

if that's the case, i'll be setting myself on fire before i buy an ipod.

that's funny, for a while your reasoning for #6 was a deal-breaker for me for the opposite reason - I couldn't get quicktime without having to download iTunes (at least, not directly from apple). Now they've separated them I believe (at least, you can get QT by itself).

Ok, there are a lot of people pointing out what ipod does not have such as support for more video/audio codecs, sorting options, FM tuner and 'real battery life' however I'd like to know other players that do things better than the ipod?

Sure there are some short comings of the ipod (most of which I and 95% of people don't care about) but you can't say that the ipod sucks unless there is more than one player that actually does most if not all things better than the ipod. Are there any other there?

Yeah, but your MP3's don't magically appear out of nowhere. You either have to download them or rip them from a CD. iTunes includes a ripper.

That depends on what you're primarily using it for. As far as video is concerned, Creative's Vision (as well as the Vision M and perhaps the upcoming W) seems to have an advantage over the iPod. Better resolutions, bigger screen (normal Vision and Vision W), more natively supported formats, and no DRM. Plus the Vision comes with RCA cables so you can hook it directly to your TV right out of the box. It is a bit larger, but it's all screen. I'm not sure about battery life comparisons.

It all comes down to personal preference obviously, and I for one just don't like how the iPod works. I don't care for its click-wheel or menu interface and I have absolutely no use for iTunes.

I also don't understand why we're being asked to compare everything to the iPod. Why can't we be asking what's so great about the iPod (other than its popularity) that warrants it as being the benchmark for all other players?

People like to bash the iPod because it is the "trendy" non-trendy thing to do.... I have had my g3 iPod for 2 1/2 years now and I love it. It serves my purpose of playing music. iTunes is very simple to use. It would be cool to have an FM trans built in but if I had the option of an add on FM trans. or a built in, slightly bigger iPod, I would take the non-built in option. My next purchase will be a video ipod with touchscreen support.
