I've always figured it's for being helpful to others. There are some here who actually give good advice in a variety of topics.

I've gotten great advice from allisolm, lots of laughs from RossMAN (I think I've given him a few, too--remember the Cheetos discussion?)(OK, he's not elite, but he has a great title), super help from YOyoYOhowsDAjello (OK, he's not elite either, but also has a great title), and so forth.

If you're helpful and reasonbly considerate, I figure good things will come your way.

Any "custom" title is changed by the mods themselves. Users never have access to change their own titles. (Unless, of course, the user is a mod, but let's not have that discussion as it can only go downhill.)
