I would like to meet some of these self-proclaimed experts. I know that I try to help as many people as possible, but there is only so much that I know. What really bugs me is people that bitch about not getting help from other members. How much are you paying these other members to try an help you? That's right. You are not paying a dime. So at least appreciate the fact that some members make an effort at helping you. Even recently a member said that no one on these forums was able to help him so he decided to leave Anandtech. Well with an attitude like that you will never get any help. Other members expect answers within minutes. Well I won't be the first to say it, but it might just not happen. Be patient and eventually someone will be able to help you.

Also many members come here for help and give a broad description of the problem and expect answers. For the most part these broad descriptions will not help solve any problems. Many times more information such as system specs, components, etc are necessary to troubleshoot the problem. If you have a problem with members not being able to help you, maybe you should just ignore those members or take your problems elsewhere.

Minendo- you missed my point......it's not that you can't get any help from members, it's that there are so many members that aren't here for the technical part of the site.......if 90% of forum members are here for the off topic forum, then there aren't very many people left for the other forums.....check the "Today" section and see what the top posted topics are.......majority of them have NOTHING to do with technology at all.......maybe they should change that section to exclude off topic topics......i just recently posted a topic in the general hardware forum about OT taking over the forums.....i got parially flamed for not posting it in off topic......as if anyone is going to agree with me in OT about OT taking over and being bad for the forums....the thing is, i don't go here for a freekin' chat room and that is what it seems to be downgrading to....

I apologize for missing your point. I do agree that it does require some searching to find decent topics, but Off Topic is also fun. I don't think it is necessary to remove OT, but I think that moderation may need to be increased in OT.

also.....there was a recent OT topic asking how old everyone is....if you look through that topic, the majority of the people that were considered above average members according to the member ratings, were under 20!....take a look at an example here.....

"how old are you?" post

The link you have posted is invalid. What is so wrong with a member being young?

no problem with a user being yound, but i do have a problem with a fifteen year old giving all kinds of advice......i understand that they may be educated enough to know wat they are talking about, but, do they really have "diamond member" experience?....or is it just b/c they have posted thousands of useless topics?

If there's one thing I've discovered here, it's that post count does not reflect on member knowledge. People who have been here longer just know the ropes a bit better is all, with regard to rules and forum procedure. They may have read more posts than a senior member, for example. But just because a member is diamond does not mean that they are qualified to answer a question effectively. Post count by no means reflects experience and education.

Also, age does not reflect post status. Paulson was a diamond member when he was 14 (correct me if I'm wrong paulson :) ). I'm sure there are some members here who have a wealth of life experience, yet who do not post much at all, thus they are golden members perhaps or senior.

my reply in PM to e-tech pointing me out to this thread ....... I respect the effort he is making but I don't agree with it.

Thanks for the lift up ...... I don't agree with it in totality...... cos' I think it's a place to let out steam !

And I don't care about the # of posts or even the name accompanying it.

I know I have made some stupid posts at times but believe me ... the idea of jacking up my status was never in my mind ....... uuuhhhh.... mostly.
Having said that I do rem' quoting postcount+1 a couple of times and never did it again cos' that didn't suit my thinking.

You see, it's OT and you have to give people a break ... if they want to discuss serious topics .... there are those too !
But, if they want a break ..... they have that option too.

Tell me ..... why do u think I come here ? to ATOT ...... till I had over 1000 posts I had never come here to OT. I could just as easily chat around in ICQ,yahoo or msn .......
I like it cos' there's a certain intellectual strain even in the nef threads...
Have u ever heard anyone say " I am proud cos' I nef. ?"

And I am glad when I am able to help someone or mostly as is the case they help me out.
These "nef" posts have got me some "friends" here and it seems I belong here .

Last but not the least ....
If someone does not like a thread .... let it die ....
If u put your objections in .... then u r bumping it up !

Since, I feel u care deeply about the issue .... and I can and do have some control over myself ... what I can do is "be careful about my posts".
I hope you realise the effort I will be putting in without even knowing you.

And for me that's what ATOT is all about.

If I may be so bold, I think post count numbers are useless. Get rid of them.

I also think that the mods should remove the really empty threads, Off Topic is fine, but just wasteful stupid threads are rampant. You can find examples, I don't want to name names or threads.

The mods should trim away the trolls and neffs, in my opinion. This place is getting kind of childish.

I'm not exactly following what Zuni is saying about not modefying the Fusetalk code. Does that mean they won't edit the code (as in script) or that they won't change any settings from default, even if the software supports it "out of the box?" I run a UBB forum and it's a rather simple interface issue to take out member post counts.

As for neffing, I never read the Off Topic forum at all. I have other places to go for that sort of thing. Not that I wouldn't mind talking about a myriad of issues with certain posters here--but there's just too much static. And yes, most of it is either immature, neffing, or both.

But that behavior DOES spill over into the other forums (which all seem to be languishing a bit and could use a jump start lately, but that could just be the season) where posters often give the ***same*** advice without even acknowledging that it had been given 5 times before in the thread by other posters, or putting a new spin on it or offering something substantive. When someone with an "authoritative" (if only in their own minds) title attached to their name, such as gold, platinum, or lifer, behaves like this--it tends to put off newer users who might feel that their own contributions to the thread are going unnoticed and that some heavyweight had to say the same thing for it to be valid.

And I agree that Yakko's comment that he's worried about his own "fun" and not the communites was indeed cold. Chilling actually. Anyone who makes over 10K posts without gaining elite status should probably find a new hobby...

Actually, I think he did. I haven't seen him around in a while. He's either been given a time out or he's going cold turkey on us. :D

Well it looks like you were wrong on when I would reach 20,000. I am not suprised by that though. Not only have I not been given a time out but I still have the same hobbies. Like I said post count does not matter to me. When I read the site I post. That is how I make comments to a thread. I find it very hard to make a reply without posting. And if I was so worried about my post count why wouldn't I start more topics of my own instead of looking for others? If you search through the whole forum and its archives I think there are less than 20 topics started by me.

Hey Yakko, throw them all for a loop and change your posting habits. You're smart and funny, you don't post about the same thing time and time again, just knock off the neffing..or at least cut down on it.

BTW, I haven't a problem with Yakko, Certainly not Adul and I enjoy debating Ethech. Those are three members I would miss if any one of them decided to leave.

On the other hand, there are many Neff who if they left and were asked about people would say"Who?"
Change my posting habits? You mean like starting my own topics? Sorry but I post as who I am. If you were to talk to me in person you would find I have a lot of one or two word replies. Sometimes that says more than a paragraph. Sometimes nothing more needs to be said.

What is so damn chilling about my comment? Are you trying to say that you are worried about every member having fun when they are here? You must be stressed as hell worrying that much. I got news for you, some people are not having fun and you can't change that fact. When I posted my topic about my house being robbed do you think I was having fun or just venting a little? I come here to have fun. I know that not everyone is going to have fun while they are here for one reason or another, therefore I do not concern myself with it. You people seem to be taking my statement to mean that I come here to intentionally make others time here less enjoyable. At any given time there are usually at least 400 people online and I am not going to worry if they all have fun.

Also just because the only threads you notice of mine don't always say a lot you need to remember that not everything I say is right out in the open. For example, in a recent thread by a member about quitting smoking my reply was nobody likes a quitter, however the PM I sent to that same member said something entirely different. Sometimes nothing more than one or two words need to be said. Sometimes a thread needs a bump so I give it but I do not always just put bump as the reply since that is kind of bland.

That being said I am going to eat a snack and watch some TV.

Edit - It's yakko dammit!! :|:|
