Bush decided not to use the weather machine so close to mid term elections, he figured it could hurt republican congressman getting re-elected

My wife and I met a couple in Florida last year that actually believed in "government using weather machine to turn on populace" conspiracy theory. I didn't even have to pick my jaw up off the floor because it hit the floor so hard it bounced right back up.

This was a seemingly very intelligent couple that did web design, had multiple servers in their home, and owned a pet store too. I was just in awe of the crap that reasonably intelligent people believe.

The capacity for ignorance is astounding. Global warming exists--get over it--and the lack of hurricanes this year implies nothing.

I am not going to say that there is or is not global warming, because I don't know. However, I think that people are looking for ways to support it and are overlooking anything that does not. We had a very active hurricane season last year, and people said, "Look, it's because of global warming!". Then we had above-average temperatures this year, and people said the same thing. If the next 2-3 (or even 10) years had below-average temperatures and less-active hurricane seasons, people aren't going to say that it repudiates support for global warming. However, if the year after that, we have above-average temperatures and a very active hurricane, people are going to say that it's global warming.

Lets put some perspective on things.

One major hurricane hitting the "sweet" spot is all it takes. Hell, even a tropical storm dumping 20 inches of rain could do a lot of damage and kill a lot of people depending on the circumstances.

Just because no hurricanes have hit the east or gulf coasts doesn't mean it hasn't been an active tropical cyclone season. There was a thread last week about a HUGE typhoon that swalloed up wake island.

So, you guys don't think the unusually hot summer is a better indication of global warming than a lower than average hurricane season. I take that back lower than above average. This is actually an average season.

Right on cue...Tropical Storm Florence has just formed in the Atlantic. It's probably a fish storm but there is a chance the high to its north may push it far enough west to hit the east coast. Everyone on the east coast keep an eye out.

Unusually hot? Didn't seem to be around here...

Seriously. This has been the coldest august I've ever experienced.

that's because of the increased cold air coming down from the north, which is caused by global warming. hotter months melt the ice caps more, which cause more cool air, which eventually cause more cold fronts to come continentally for a short period of time. that's what wer're experiencing right now.

http://climvis.ncdc.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/cag3/state-map-display.pl check how much hotter this summer's been from normal... you'll be surprised.

And... who's been disappointed by the lack of hurricanes? Come on, admit it... you loved being glued to the television when Katrina hit... like it or not, it was exciting.
