We talk a lot about the really great games, and we also give plenty of our thoughts on the games we hated or are universally regarded as bad. However, what you don't hear much are the games that reviewed poorly for one reason or another, but actually are pretty fun.

For me, it would have to be Timeshift. Metcritic gives it a 70 overall, but some individual scores are as low as 50. http://www.metacritic.com/game.../timeshift?q=timeshift

This game got pretty bad reviews overall, mainly for it's lack of originally, but for me the game was fun pretty much from start to finish. Yes, they did re-use a bunch if ideas and concepts from other games, but they stole the ideas and implemented them well IMO. At $17 used from GameCrazy, it was a really worthwhile purchase.

Just curious if others have games they really liked that didn't get stellar reviews. These tend to be super cheap and plentiful at used game stores, so it would definitely be nice to find a few more of these gems in the rough.

I liked Too Human.

Dying was INSANELY annoying but whatever. I liked the presentation (sorta).

I liked Assassin's Creed more than most. Sure the missions were repetitive after a while, but I loved damn near everything else.

I'm playing Need for Speed Pro Street, and I'm enjoying it. I found the cop chases really annoying in previous games, especially in Most Wanted where cop chases were a requirement to move on in the story. I would have preferred an open world like the other games, but this game is ok.

Sonic 3D Blast. I thought that game was awesome when it first came out. It was Sonic, in 3D!... sort of. It hasn't aged well though.
For me though, it's mostly games that I love that got high reviews, but nobody played. :p

I loved Sonic 3D Blast when it came out. Another game I liked that wasn't popular was Psychic Force 2012 for Dreamcast. I played that game with a couple friends for more than a year.

Hot Shots Golf: Out Of Bounds.

It's not cause it's a bad game, cause it's far from that ... it's just that many people don't know about it. it's very cartoony and looks very childish as a golf game, however, the physics engine in the game is the best one on the market. it also ads so much stuff to the golf game that makes it a blast.

the game ships with only 6 courses and has 2 DLC ones, and the 6 courses are ALL better than any of the 20 or so on Tiger Woods 2009 imo.

it's the best golf game hands down, and probably my favorite game on PS3.

everyone who plays it loves it, but hardly anyone plays it ... that is the problem.

so i guess i'm saying it's more of a hidden gem rather than a hated game. it's not that people DISLIKE it, it's just that not many people even KNOW about it, therefore they do not like it.

I've never heard of it. Is that a PS3 exclusive?

I've loved and played to death every Dynasty Warriors game but they are getting progressively worse reviews each release.

I'll post some more when I remember.

*high five*

Yeah I got my sister who is not that big of a gamer hooked on DW6, the split screen is sweet. I go around bell raping with Wei Yan and she just spams Yue Ying's arrows everywhere. Only have three rare ponies so far. My first DW was part Deux

A little known game that I dug was Urban Chaos: Riot Response. The indestructable shield was an interesting gameplay mechanic. Satisfying game to play. I also like off the wall platformers like Voodoo Vince and Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy.

- Earth Defense Force 2017 is not a great game, but it is a fun and mindless distraction for small chunks of time. If it had online co-op it would be fantastic.
- Dark Sector was a solid experience, but there's no reason to ever play it again once you complete the single player, which doesn't last very long.
- I've enjoyed all of the main Dynasty Warriors games (but never played the Empires or XL versions), but I couldn't get into DW6 and think I'm ready for a proper sequel.

I swear there have to be some better examples, but I can't think of them at the moment.

Red steel for the wii. It got panned by critics, and the swordfighting was a bit retarded, but I had a genuinely fun time with the shooting.

PS1:
Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi - I absolutely loved this game, the learning curve seemed incredibly steep for a fighter mainly because of timing but I really enjoyed it
Soulblade - Grew into Soul Calibur, but no matter how many people I know that had PS1s no one ever seemed to know this game existed.

Saturn:
Guardian Heroes - AWESOME as shit, no other way to describe it
I'm sure there are dozens more to be listed under Saturn since it seemed like no one in the states had one, but I think it was my favorite system ever so far

I'll have alot more to add to this list after I give it alot more thought instead of doing work today...

Oh yeah! Soul Blade for PS1 was awesome, but was not widely played at the time. I actually first played this game as Soul Edge the arcade game - Soul Blade saved me a lot of quarters. Good times... :)

Battlestations: Midway!

Fantastic naval war game. A great mix of strategy, tactics and action. With so many console games fitting into the same few categories, this one will give you a more unique experience than any other game I've played recently.
